is a series of advertising mock-ups which imagines modern products with the aesthetics and production of 1970s consumer electronics. Faux-wood paneling, angular fonts, and more orange than you can shake a stick at.
Almost 30 years after original sale, some 80's toys are sought after for their less than pleasant odour.
If you can get hold of one today, you'll discover that the He-Man villains Stinkor and Moss Man still cling to their particular [pungent] aroma. [more inside]

Mountain Dew, Gamma World - and cake!
GeekDad's Ethan Gilsdorf uncovers a long-lost pile of loot - silent Super 8 footage of a 1981 Friday night D&D session. JJ Abrams couldn't have faked it this good. (SLYT-sorta)

Secret Fun Blog.
A mixture of pop-culture artifacts
, retro goodness
and childhood nostalgia
. Don't miss the audio
offerings. [Secret Fun Blog is an auxiliary of Secret Fun Spot, which appeared on Metafilter in 2002 and is worth revisiting as it has been greatly expanded and updated since then.]
It being the 5th of November and that… here's
a bit of fireworks nostalgia.
Dan Goodsell (of the unbelieveably great - and previously linked
- Tick Tock Toys
) has been keeping a blog
for the last six months or so covering a variety of subjects (including his webcartoon, Mr Toast
), but largely focused on U.S. pop culture ephemera of the 50's though the 70's, with a ton of great stuff
Retro arcade photoset.
God bless the gentleman who saved these photos from a 1980's arcade. You will cherish the garish and mock the hair, but this one hits the sweet spot of nostalgia
One two three, four five, six seven nine ten, eleven twelve
. [6.5mb .wmv]. An excellent remix video of the the Sesame Street 'Pinball Song'. Features the Pointer Sisters on vocals, apparently. The remix was done by Braces Tower
, who also have the mp3
up on their site.
Old Brands Never Die; They're Just Waiting For Someone To Wake Them Up:
With the Nostalgia and Retro boom playing off the increasing number of niche markets made possible by the Web, it's time to start desperately plugging those favourite, time-honoured brands which "they" unforgivably stopped making, leaving their loyal fans in the lurch. What would you bring back, given half a chance? (I'll weigh in with Sobranie Black Russian cigarettes; the original Volkswagen Beetle; the Oldsmobile or, definitely, the Olympia manual Monica typewriter.
Those of you with crazy multi-tasking skills might want to check out Arcadia
, where you play four different super simple games at the same time. Extra points for the stylishly retro chunky pixels look, which brings me right back to happy afternoons spent with my 2600
Let's talk about childhood toys.
A wander down memory lane, past care-bears and etch-a-sketches and barrel-o-monkeys. Warning: this site resulted in the bidding up of auctions for Weebles "Tree House"
action sets. I'd forgotten how marvelously upright they remained until I whipped their little egg-like bodies out of a second-story window onto concrete. What was your favorite childhood toy? Do you still have it, or do you have the sudden need to re-acquire it?
NYT Arts story that conjectures critical (and popular) retro fixations are not only something new (or somehow newsworthy) but can be credibly associated with 9/11 sentiment.
Oh, and freshly minted art isn't as good or noteworthy as the old stuff, even if that old stuff (Nevermind
, Eastwood's Unforgiven
) is from the early '90s. Pick apart, please.
After a 31 year absence, Davey and Goliath
are making their return to television. It's funny, I had no idea it was religious programming until years after I stopped watching it. Oh, and this news explains explains those great Mountain Dew ads
Save pinball! "It's an American icon," said Stern, ever the salesman. "Pinball is cool because it is retro. It's a Volkswagen bug, a PT Cruiser, khaki pants."
I used to collect all of these pink plastic wrestling figures and now i-mockery has finished the big task of giving names and profiles to all of the original figures. 233 to be exact. Great retro memories for me on this one. Some really bizarre (ie: "Klondular the Barnacle Muncher
"), yet extremely funny descriptions for some of these figures. There's also a Mr. Blocky
tribute in there. I always hated him though since he made one of the prongs in my ring snap off. He was just too fat.
Room-a-zoom-zoom! These cartoons were bad in a good way!
When I was a wee lad, I loved cartoons like Blue Falcon/Dynomutt
and Hong Kong Phooey
. My gotta-watch cartoon was The Superfriends
, which had some of the most unintentionally-hilarious dialogue ever. And can anyone for get The World of Sid and Marty Krofft
? Anyone else get nostalgic over shows like this?
Skeletor and Gang:
What is it about the combination of stop-motion animation, He-Man action figures, and sped-up heavy metal that makes me laugh until I hurt? "Skeletor, Mantenna and Grizzlor are having a party! Oh no! Moss-Man attacks! Defend us Squeeze!"
This is an amazing quicktime movie
about 80's games. Just watching it makes me want to go play some pong. I just love the matrix part.
(Warning: This is a 7mb quicktime movie)
This has to be one of the coolest sites ever.
Can't remember of the details of the 1973 saturday morning schedule, the one that turned you into a media junkie. It's here! And now TV Party seems to have partnered with YesterdayLand
, "a new entertainment company that produces retro-themed entertainment and merchandise based on classic television, movies, music, toys, snack food, and fashion." What's up with that?
Anyone else getting misty-eyed?
