Late Friday night, a young man named Mark Carson was killed, shot point blank, in Greenwich Village. Carson's death was the 22nd anti-gay hate crime in New York so far this year, and the fifth this month. Carson was shot on 6th Avenue and 8th St., just blocks from St. Vincent's Hospital, which closed in 2010. He was brought to Beth Israel, about a mile away, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The suspect, 33 year old Elliot Morales was caught immediately after the shooting. NYPD now reports that before the shooting, Morales was seen spewing homophobic remarks at Annisa Restaurant staff and threatening to put a bullet through a bartender’s forehead if he called cops. Photographer Arne Svenson has sparked a bit of controversy with his recent show "The Neighbors," about which he says, "I turned to the residents of a glass-walled apartment building across the street from my NYC studio. The Neighbors don’t know they are being photographed; I carefully shoot from the shadows of my home into theirs. I am not unlike the birder, quietly waiting for hours, watching for the flutter of a hand or the movement of a curtain as an indication that there is life within." In "The Voyeur Next Door," The Tribeca Citizen reports, "The images are gorgeous—the Art in America review [PDF] cites Hopper, Vermeer, and Hitchcock—but they certainly bring up questions regarding privacy. Svenson, in his website remarks, dismisses the issue: 'For my subjects there is no question of privacy; they are performing behind a transparent scrim on a stage of their own creation with the curtain raised high.'" For the curious, The New York Times featured Svenson's Tribeca loft home [slide show here], the staging ground for the telephoto-enabled artistic home invasions, as part of their "Great Homes and Destinations" section back in December, 2012.

New York City officials are asking visitors to Central Park's Harlem Meer to beware of the northern snakehead fish, a predator common in the rivers and lakes of Asia but considered an invasive species in American waters, which had been spotted. NYC Department of Environmental Conservation The DEC is asking fishermen who catch one give the department a call immediately and to not release the fish back into the water. In fact, anglers are asked to kill the fish, freeze it, and then report the catch.

They are merely a spectacularly impressive collection of largish Basquiats from a number of private collections. In this way, the show replicates the tragedy of this artist’s short and chaotic life, where the feverish buzz of celebrity came to overpower any assessment of the works as individual objects.

I have found the spoken word poetry of Denice Frohman. I bring her to you. She's from NYC and works in Philadelphia. The first performance I stumbled on was Dear Straight People from her preliminary performance at Women of the World Poetry Slam 2013. Weapons, also from this year's Women of the World. She won the championship. This is the finals. The editing is terrible, but she comes on at 7:16. And the other ladies are also awesome. Abuela (do you remember you yet?) An anti littering campaign on local Philadelphia news in 2010 she speaks about raising awareness. Gangsta Poetry from 2009. She is active in the Philly Youth Poetry Movement. And at Tedx Philly she and Gregory Corbin ask how we can encourage young people? Denice also recently performed at an immigration rally. I lost it when she said "like proper has a sound." And that's when I knew I had to make this my first post on the blue.
