I, I wish you could swim / Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, just for one day

Tied to the 90s

What can we really tell about these tracks’ place in a world where the common consensus has airbrushed the Outhere Brothers and Robson & Jerome into a parallel world? Track one: Parklife by Blur. Track two: Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis. So began Polygram's series of Shine compilations, ten double CDs issued between April 1995 and August 1998 - an imperfect document of a timeframe that includes a battle for number one making the news bulletins, and Jarvis Cocker invading Michael Jackson's Brit performance. The Shine Years, by Simon Sweeping The Nation, is recapping the Shine compilation albums chronologically, track by track.

We are never, ever, ever, getting back together, you lying, cheating ...

Somewhere between his earlier rendition of Go the F**k to Sleep (again on YouTube, NSFW) and Radiohead's cover of Wonderwall comes Samuel L. Jackson covering Taylor Swift.

Nothing Else Matters

Kathryn Bigelow's striking bin Laden manhunt thriller Zero Dark Thirty arrives in wide release tonight on the heels of a final artful trailer -- one with oddly familiar musical accompaniment. The funereal hymn, a cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" (lyrics), deftly recasts the 90s power ballad as a haunting dirge of quiet grief, shattered ideals, and a singleminded focus on revenge, a perfect distillation of the film's profoundly grim thesis. But while the song may be fitting, it wasn't composed for the project -- it's just the latest success story from Belgian women's choir Scala & Kolacny Brothers, whose mournful reinterpretations of classic and modern rock -- catapulted by their rendition of "Creep" in The Social Network -- have made them famous around the world, with star turns in the likes of Homeland ("Every Breath You Take") and Downton Abbey ("With or Without You"). Cover comparison site WhoSampled offers a list of YouTube comparisons between the covers and the originals; look inside for more of their work in movies and television. [more inside]

The World in its Extreme

It is the hottest place in the world, and the driest. It is home to thriving commerce and to desperate, hopeless poverty. It is the Sahara, an eternal source of fascination and terror. Part 2. Part 3. [Hat tip: Longform]

Extraordinary Renditions

Jay-Z wanted the guitar to look like a big, goofy prop (in Gallagher's formulation, after all, guitars aren't instruments so much as membership cards); he wanted to mistreat the melody, not coddle it; and he couldn't be bothered to remember lyrics that, when you think about it, sound sort of flubbed to begin with. By butchering the cover, Jay-Z weaponized it.

Pull up an Oasis and sit a spell

Pull up an Oasis and sit a spell La-z-boy is introducing the Oasis, an armchair complete with built-in refrigerator and massager. This even beats out the Explorer for sheer passivity accommodation.
