has released the third video in her Tropes vs. Women in Video Games series. It's an exhaustive (and exhausting) look at how women have been used as background decorations in video games for the last three decades. [previously

What goes on in our minds when we see someone naked?
A 2011 study
[PDF] led by Kurt Gray revealed a curious fact about how people perceive other people when they take their clothes off: What emerged was that we see the capacity for feelings, whether pleasure or pain or happiness or anger, as distinct from the capacity for intellectual thought and planning. Namely, that we treat those we objectify as less intelligent, yet simultaneously we endow them with a
greater ability to

I was the first girl I knew to get breasts.
I remember being in sixth grade and this horrible girl named Erica coming up to me before social studies and saying, “You don't have to stick out your chest like that,” and I almost cried. (I cried very easily as a child, and by “as a child” I mean “up until this morning.”) Because I wasn't actually sticking my chest out at all, it was just like that.

São Paulo Fashion Week, the nation’s most important fashion event, has been forced by local prosecutors to ensure that at least 10 percent of its models are of African or indigenous descent.
The model scouts see it differently - it's all about what sells. "The goal" Brazilian model scouts say, "is to find the right genetic cocktail of German and Italian ancestry, perhaps with some Russian or other Slavic blood thrown in. Such a mix, they say, helps produce the tall, thin girls with straight hair, fair skin and light eyes that Brazil exports to the runways of New York, Milan and Paris with stunning success." Yet, "on the pages of its magazines, Brazil’s beauty spectrum is clearer. Nonwhite women, including celebrities of varying body types, are interspersed with white models. But on the runways, the proving ground for models hoping to go abroad, the diversity drops off precipitously." [more inside]

All The Nudes That Are Fit To Print:
It's no exaggeration to say La Repubblica
is Italy's finest newspaper. It's liberal, modern, intelligent and independent. Along with Spain's El Pais
; France's Libération
and Le Monde
; the UK's Guardian
; Germany's Die Zeit
and Portugal's Público
, it's one of the mainstays of the European Left and Centre-Left. And yet its website offers calendars
in the, er, Pirelli
tradition of time-keeping. Imagine the New York Times
being similarly... liberal. Can soft prOn and serious reporting live together? Is it an Italian thing? The only other example I can think of is Spain's Interviú
, a magazine which in its heyday mixed superb (again, left-leaning) investigative journalism with politically incorrect - and photographically retouched - tits and ass. (NSFW, obviously, unless you're somewhere in Southern Europe or Louisiana.)

The New Porn?
The trend toward music subculture-specific porn sites that began with the launch of raverporn.net
more than two years ago has continued with sites like suicidegirls.com
(featuring goth, punk, and raver girls) and supercult.com
(featuring mod and indie rock chicks). SuicideGirls has been discussed extensively on MetaTalk
. What do you think about these sites? Are they porn or erotica? Are the young (mostly male) entrepreneurs who have started these sites making porn less degrading (and/or more appealing) to women OR are they just a new generation of Hugh Hefners?
