Who holds the longest home sell-out streak in professional sports? The Red Sox have the longest streak in major league baseball, just under 700 games (and counting.) The Washington Redskins have sold out 348 straight home games, a streak dating back to 1968. But the longest streak belongs to the Portland Trail Blazers, who sold out 814 straight home dates between 1977 and 1995. Yesterday, they were joined by the Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League, whose victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods marked their 814th straight sellout. The Dragons, despite playing in an economically troubled mid-sized city, have sold out every home game the team has ever played, drawing over 8,000 fans a game, better than most AAA clubs. Dragons manager Delino DeShields was last seen on MetaFilter as a hitting coach in the independent Pioneer League. General manager Gary Mayse explains how the Dragons have found success in hard economic times.

15 years ago Dayton, Ohio band Brainiac released their third, and final full-length album Hissing Prigs in Static Couture on Touch & Go records. Lead by Tim Taylor on vocals/keyboards the album perfected a brand of short-circuit robot rock that made dance music out of violent shrieks and spasms. The band has been credited by Trent Rezor in 'really inspiring to me from a sonic influence' and eulogized by Jeff Buckley at his last gig. Brainiac released the EP Electro-Shock for President in 1997, then began work on their never-to-be-completed fourth album rumored to be on Interscope, however, fate tragically intervened when Taylor lost control of his car on the way home from recording killing him in an explosion. Following the death of Taylor, the group disbanded and most members kept relatively quiet except for guitarist John Schmersal who later went on to form the indie-rock band Enon.

High-Speed Rail off-track in Ohio

Depending on who you ask, Ohio's C3 Railroad project is either a) a conventional railroad project that's going to restore slow rail service between Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati or; b) it's a visionary initiative of President Obama and Transportation secretary, Roy LaHood, that has the intention of rebooting Ohio's entire infrastructure. Obama has gotten Congress to give Ohio $400M to get this project started, but the Tea Party-friendly Governor-Elect, John Kasich (R) feels that passenger-rail in Ohio is a waste of money and would rather use that money for his own projects. Details about the 3C project are fleeting. Some Ohio news sites report that the project is going to consist of new High-Speed Rail cars, while others allow Kasich to stick to his slow-train allegations.. It's clear that Obama is looking to the future and to the State's viability for heavy industry and services, but Kasich feels as though he could spend that money better and he told them so. Here's what LaHood wrote him back… In the meantime, Kasich is willing to lose the funding, just to make a point.
