Four years ago metafilter was introduced to Pandora. This weekend, the New York Times introduced the world to the minds behind the music genome project. The essential question guiding the project: are inherent properties of music more important than the social connections that bring music to us?

Fundable.com is closed permanently. According to the site's current index, there is bad blood between the two founders of the site, Louis Helm and John Pratt. The recent story of Mary Robinette Kowal being ripped off was apparently the final straw. (as a personal note, I've run 2 fundraisers/ransoms for my podcast through fundable and have no complaints. My third ransom was still underway and I have no idea if the money will show up or be refunded to the donors.)

Hopefully they won't screw it up.

La Pura Vida features monthly group shows edited by various photographers. La Pura Vida turned two years old this month. Selections are pulled from a matching Flickr group. There is also a blog that features some great photography as well, in addition to some interesting discussion on photography, copyright, etc. The tumblelog is also usually quite good. I would also be remiss if I didn't point out Photographs on the Brain.

Just how credible is Wikipedia? While some have tested this empirically, others have chosen more dubious methodology. For a site that gives no credit to its post authors, one wonders, why even bother?

Maciej Ceglowski of Idlewords has made a new bookmarking service called pinboard. The goal seems to be to recreate and improve on del.icio.us, which is kind of crazy now. The site has a membership fee which grows as the userbase grows (number of users * $0.001). Maciej Ceglowski calls this a financial CAPTCHA.

Time to listen to Bird Song Radio - A 'filler' radio station that played on DAB radio in the UK until this week has been pulled from the air, much to the chagrin of thousands of listeners. Reportedly, Terry Pratchett is a fan, saying "There's something about the sound of the outdoors that adds texture to a room. It cools the room down, makes you feel relaxed." The station, playing a 25 minute loop of birdsong recorded as a test pattern before the launch of Classic FM in 1992, has now been replaced by Amazing Radio, which " features songs from unsigned artists who have uploaded their music to website amazingtunes.com over the past four years. But it's okay! You can still listen to it online at Birdsong Radio.

The Gorillaz documentary Bananaz has premiered online and can be viewed in full on Babelgum. "In the late 1990's Jamie Hewlett met Damon Albarn and the concept of Gorillaz was born sometime after. At the birth of the project, film maker Ceri Levy set about to document this undertaking. The result is Bananaz, 91 minutes inside the remarkable real world of Gorillaz the most successful animated band ever.  Levy filmed alongside and behind the scenes from 2000 to 2006, from first drawings, animations, music and the musicians, through to the faces behind the voices of Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Three browser-based shmups for channeling your internet rage: Blueshift, Arcanacra and Rapture Capture. Tips inside. Blueshift: Use arrows to move, A to fire, S to activate your shield, and D to switch weapons. The larger, slower ships contain additional weapons - the guided missiles are especially nice. Your ships moves have a momentum to them - something to keep in mind as you dodge enemy bullets. Arcanacra: Use arrows to move, Z to fire, and X to bomb. I recommend clicking the "DISPLAY x2" link for a larger game display in a pop-up window. Moves FAST. Rapture Capture: OK, technically not a shmup because you don't shoot. Instead, you use your mouse to fling about a giant whip that lashes bullets and captures enemies. Games takes a while to load.

Can nonprofit news models save journalism? The advertising-supported, for-profit institutional model of journalism (skip this ad) is on the wane. Except for a few large and successful outlets, investment in comprehensive reporting has suffered from a shrinking bottom line, even as the hoped-for development of citizen journalism has been generally underwhelming. But some see a solution taking shape in not-for-profit, independent, citizen-supported online news organizations that would employ skilled professional journalists. Pointing to the encouraging recent growth of NPR and PBS as news outlets, many industry thinkers are starting to agree that "The only way to save journalism is to develop a new model that finds profit in truth, vigilance, and social responsibility." Editors are beginning to experiment with models like that of Paul Stieger's ProPublica (a sort of reporting clearinghouse), Geoff Dougherty's ChiTown Daily News, The NYC Center for an Urban Future's City Limits, and Scott Lewis' Voice of San Diego. Great idea - will it work?

"The Baldwin Project seeks to make available online a comprehensive collection of resources for parents and teachers of children. Our focus, initially, is on literature for children that is in the public domain in the United States. This includes all works first published before 1923." Many of the texts include illustrations from the original book, such as Celtic Fairy Tales (1892) and The Children of Odin (1920) (but alas not The Boy's Cuchulain, which had fabulous illustrations).

"What would you say if I told you that I filled my entire living room with completely original works of art for less than $300?" Andrea Dickson from Wise Bread has found an unlikely -- though, the more you think about it, almost obvious -- place to find original art from new artists: Ebay. If you can filter through the crapload of "artistic nudes", there are plenty of gems, and usually at buyers' market prices. And, as Andrea's mother mused, when it comes to decorating the house, it beats buying mass-produced art from Costco, which is about as original as a Big Mac.
