Climate Name Change
"Since 1954, the World Meteorological Organization has been naming extreme storms after people. As scientific evidence shows that climate change is creating increasingly frequent and devastating storms, and with climate scientists declaring these extreme weather events as the new normal, we propose a new naming system. A system that names extreme storms caused by climate change, after the policy makers who deny climate change and obstruct climate policy."

Above The Game: A Guide to Getting Awesome with Women
has raised $16,369 out of its $2,000 goal on Kickstarter. Casey Malone has called it out as "a book about how to sexually assault women"
and "a rape manual"
, including quotes from seddit, the seduction subReddit
(Google cache). A petition asking Kickstarter to withdraw funding
has gathered close to 50,000 signatures, but while Kickstarter agrees that the material is "abhorrent and inconsistent with our values", it has declined to cancel the project
Author Ken Hoinsky
is "devastated and troubled"
by allegations that his book promotes rape, because the quotes were taken out
. However, Jezebel reports that Hoinsky e-mailed them, "Wanna let your readers know [about the Kickstarter]? I'm sure they'll have a field day with this"
which indicates he may be banking on the outrage
and the backlash
for added publicity.

The women's petition against coffee
"the Excessive use of that Newfangled, Abominable, Heathenish
Liquor called COFFEE, which Riffling Nature
of her Choicest Treasures, and Drying up the Radical
Moisture, has so Eunucht our Husbands, and Crippled
our more kind Gallants, that they are become as Impotent,

unhappy Berry is said to be brought." (via

Apple petition was shut down yesterday by Real Networks after a single day. Why? Seems that allowing comment backfired. Instead of lambasting Apple, everyone used the forum to vent their ire at Real. Only so much freedom at a time, thank you very much.

Save the Hubble!
I know, I know, it's an internet petition... but it's to save the Hubble Telescope! That's worth a minute out of your day.

Electronic Gaming Monthly published this.
It's a photoshopped picture of a group of Russian soldiers holding the game Socom 2
. Trouble is the picture should have looked like this
, Russian soldiers holding up pictures of soldiers who died in Chechnya. Whatever you think of that war this is in pretty poor taste (added to the fact it's an advert for a shoot 'em up), but thankfully there is now an online petition
to get them to take it down.

Radiohead fan sites have been asked to remove their lyrics and tabs archives.
Yesterday, two popular Radiohead fan sites, Green Plastic
and At Ease
, were sent this email
by a legal representative of Warner Bros. Publications and Warner/Chappell Music asking them to take down any lyrics and tabs from their site. The letter claimed "their distribution constitutes an infringement of our rights under U.S. Copyright Law. More than that, the availability of these files have a direct impact on our ability to market and sell our musical arrangements and songbooks, and that adversely affects the royalties that we are able to generate and pay to the band." Those opposed have started a petition online
. Who's right on this one?

Hey, It's Not Enough We Die Of Obesity
without having to go to Hell too? Some enlightened Frenchmen are bending the Pope's ear, trying to spring Gluttony from the Deadly Sins
blacklist. Well, even clever old Thomas Aquinas
did his damnedest to narrow the seven buggers down. So: which sins would you
excuse today's poor sufferers from and which ones would you insist
on keeping, if any? [Something tells me MetaFilter is ideally suited to put in a good word for Sloth. I wonder why? Speaking of which, NYT reg. is required but you can read about it here instead. Via Arts and Letters Daily.

Aaah, the joys of PetitionOnline.com. As of right now, 840 people have petitioned Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema to change the name of "The Two Towers,"
the sequel to The Lord of the Rings, saying that Jackson purposely made the title in reference to the September 11th attacks.
Nevermind the fact that the book of the same name was published by Tolkien in 1954. Naturally, there is a petition against the petition
. Hooray, democratic process!

Does anyone know how to circulate an online petition? That is, to get one rolling? I think we need to urge President Bush to address the nation directly and as soon as possible, beseeching the American public to end the outbreak of violence against their fellow citizens of Arab (or perceived as such) extraction. The worst irony of the WTC terrorism is that angry Americans are now committing acts of terror against other Americans. Yes, Americans.
Maybe it would fall on deaf ears, but it never hurts to try, right? We have to do something.

Get the petition.
They need one million signatures before April 20 to get it back on the November ballot. If you're in California, print out the petition and start drumming up support today. It's not so often you get a second chance like this. Show the country that California does indeed, rock.
