The Requested Miami Vice Thread

September 16 1984, a television show like no other swept onto American screens via NBC. Yes, that is correct, 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of Miami Vice. The thundering opening title music became a hit all its own, and along with Glen Frey's Smuggler's Blues helped propel the television soundtrack album to record sales, only recently knocked from the top spot by the High School Musical soundtrack.

But the series didn't simply promote music. It inhabited it, used it in nearly surrealist ways, overlaid the storyline with a sheen of postmodern irony. Music was used as emotional shorthand. But in finer moments, the blend of audio and visual was sublime.

The show's impact on men's fashion cannot be understated, and even now, some are trying to bring back the pastel sensibility.

Those with access to hulu can watch episodes on demand. Everyone else, I apologize for not finding resources available in your country. Perhaps others can post them here?

Atrocious Cover Songs

When Bad Singers Happen To Good Songs: The Songicides! In today's Spectator Markus Berkmann amusingly raises the deadly spectre of the worst covers ever recorded. We're talking assassins here. I nominate Phil Collins's massacre of Holland/Dozier/Holland's "You Can't Hurry Love", as originally sung by Diana Ross and the Supremes; U2's goring of Cole Porter's "Night and Day", best sung by Sinatra or Ella and, worst of all, though he's my favourite artist, Leonard Cohen's mangling of Irving Berlin's classic "Always". What's the worst cover version you'd like to report to Musical Homicide?

Blame Phil Collins?
We knew Blame Canada wouldn't win, and to be fair, Phil probably deserved it - my real question is "what did you think of the 'Blame Canada' production number?" It was the only reason I watched tonight (not being a big awards show guy), and I'm just curious to hear what other people thought of it. Did Robin Williams wreck it? What about the mounties chorus-line? Did anyone else think he was going to do the entire song with the tape over his mouth?
My only other Oscar observation: Angelina Jolie seemed thrilled and suprised to get Best Supporting Actress. Do you think that she would have gone with the Elvira look if she expected to win?
