Two executives of the alternative newspaper chain
Village Voice Media were arrested last night after running a story about
grand jury subpoenas [PDF] they received seeking reporters' notes and information on who visits their
Phoenix New Times Web site. The article, titled "
Breathtaking Abuse of the Constitution," claims that the grand jury investigation stems from a long-running feud with controversial county sheriff
Joe Arpaio (who calls himself "America's toughest sheriff"). The subpoenas demand New Times turn over all notes, tapes and records of the reporters who have ever written about Arpaio. The subpoenas also seek online profiles of anyone who read four specific articles about Arpaio and profiles of anyone who visited the paper's Web site since Jan. 1, 2004. Also sought is information on what Web users did while on the site.

NASA's
Phoenix probe launched
Saturday from Cape Canaveral, destination Mars. Its mission is to investigate polar ice. This probe is unique for a couple of reasons: first, it will face a traditional parachute-and-retro-rockets landing, unlike
previous endeavors. Second, it will be landing far north of any previous mission. Previous Mars missions have had mixed success, with only about
half successfully making it to their destination. It is scheduled to land in May, 2008.

Phoenix runs out of gas. In a
scene reminiscent of the 70's, the entire PHX area is queued up, waiting in line for gas. Since Sunday, when this began in earnest, prices have shot up something like 50% to somewhere in between $2 and $3/gallon for unleaded. Apparently, it doesn't take much to throw off a city like Phoenix's gas supply -- a pipeline that linked Tucson to the greater PHX metro area
had to be shut down earlier this month, cutting off a major supply of precious petrol from El Paso. Panic buying ensued, throwing the whole system into total chaos.
Think alternative fuel is the answer?
Just ask 'Propane Jane.'

The name "Firebird" was chosen by Mozilla to rename their
Phoenix product. However, Firebird is also the name of a popular and long-standing open-source
database project -- and the Mozilla organization was clearly
aware of this naming conflict before making their decision.
Some feel that such an action, within the context of the open-source community, is unfair and constitutes bad etiquette, at the least. The discussion is
ongoing, but LinuxWorld reports that the Mozilla organization has deleted recent message-board comments that criticized their decision.

Man kills self and injures fiancée in wood chipper. (reg req) Phoenix police said Rodriguez told his new fiancée he had a surprise for her early Wednesday, drove her to the central Phoenix landscaping business where he worked and asked that she close her eyes and lie down. Then he lay down beside her, on what turned out to be a conveyor belt, and fed himself into a wood chipper ..
