Soupy Sales has died. Mark Evanier explained his appeal years ago, adding a bit more today. An entire live Soupy Sales Show from 1965 on YouTube: part 1, part 2, part 3.In his honor, throw a pie or two (filled with shaving cream, of course, let's not waste food). [} [} [} I can't think of a better tribute than the fact that Soupy was name-checked in a movie review just last week: "(In 'Law Abiding Citizen', Gerald Butler's) impersonation of the tragic hero is undercut by his weird resemblance to Soupy Sales. You start hoping that Shelton will kill somebody with a custard (or puffer-fish) pie to the face."

It's National Pie Day! Whether we're in search of the best pies in the United States or have long been troubled by our personal quests to turn out the perfect pie, we should all agree: quiche is not pie. The American Pie Council® (they're awfully fond of that ®), charged with promotion of the world's most sublime of comestibles, encourages you to celebrate pie. Like all illustrious foodstuffs, pie has a long and venerable history. But we don't care about then, we want pie now. So what's stopping you? Maybe it's your fear of never making the perfect pie crust (vodka!). Maybe you want something a little more unusual: sawdust, vinegar, avocado, grape, pickle. Maybe you just haven't found your favorite pie recipe. Maybe you like your pies savory, not sweet: pork, cheese and onion, chicken pot pie, mushroom. Or maybe you've had it with attempting your own and you just want the best someone else can make, whether it's from a local bakery or the freezer section, including crusts. Scholars of pie cookery rely on Rose Levy Beranbaum's The Pie and Pastry Bible and the forthcoming Pie: A Global History by Janet Clarkson. Pies, like many other delectables, have seasonal variations. The following are not pies: Boston cream pie, shepherd's pie, quiche, pizza, cheesecake. Those who taint the sanctity of National Pie Day with their consumption will be first up against the wall. Defenders of pie will be beatified. Previously: 1, 2, 3.

With few cows, no ice, and lacking refrigeration the only dairy product reliably available to the Florida Keys in the late 18th century was condensed milk. Add a local plantation abundance of small, sour key limes (known to most as West Indian limes; not the more common Persian/Tahiti lime), and inevitably someone -- perhaps Aunt Sally -- put them together to create the quintessential Florida Keys confection known as key lime pie. Tart, sweet, and oh so smooth, it is the ideal dessert to nibble on while watching the sun go down on a steamy summer evening. While the Eagle Brand can recipe is canonical (thank you, Ms. Borden), a multitude of variations exist such as cheesecake, tarts, cookies and ... mustard? And note that no matter how you take your pie, there's something aficionados all agree upon: the true pie is pale yellow, never ever green.
Finally, note that this is not Key Lime Pie, although that, also, is very tasty.

That gum you like is going to come back in style.

Twin Peaks season 2 DVD is almost here ... finally! That leaves precious few days to get prepared: bone up on cast and crew details, argue about theories, click your way through the townsfolk, obsess over every itty bitty blessed detail, buy a "best friends" necklace, keep the faith about the deleted scenes, see whether it makes any more sense in German than English, put a poster on your wall that will give you nightmares, explore the Lodges, watch very bad things happen to Jenna Elfman, walk with Coop through the Black Lodge (part 2), blow the rest of the day reading stuff. For the truly ambitious, book a room in scenic Snoqualmie and watch the entire series there.

"Al Pieda" Targets Ann Coulter
Members of the notorious culinary terrorist group "Al Pieda" launched an attack on Ann Coulter while she was speaking at the University of Arizona. The report says some pie got on her face but attendants were able to wipe it off before she received any nutrional value from the pie.
Not to be confused with the notorious math group "Al Gebra", who would have probably thrown a slide rule at her.
