The next year the Chinese followed the tradition of refraining from eating meat, drinking alcoholic drinks, engaging in sex, quarreling, telling lies or killing. The epidemic ceased, and, every year since, the people of Phuket have continued to celebrate the festival. The mediums are called mar song. Videos Hoax? The Mutual Tattooed Penis Admiration Society: Really fascinating archival footage from the 1980s of Sailor Sid, Jack Yount, and others. This is old-school tattooing and piercing, anchored in gay and S&M subcultures, just before it went mainstream. NSFW, and there are far more NSFW things a click away on these links. You will notice that tattooing on the cusp of the HIV/AIDS epidemic was sometimes done to a different standard of hygiene than is the case 25 years later. The affection and trust between the men in the videos really shines through, though. Sailor Sid's papers are now a part of the Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago; Jack Yount's collection became part of the Shawn Porter Collection which sadly appears to be offline after a crash. Online archaeology and anthropology exhibits

The Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology has a nice collection of online exhibits, including ones on Roman glassmaking, the ancient history of wine, and a history of body modification. (Other exhibits have appeared on Mefi pre vio us ly.)

"Last night false charges were filed against me and I just got out of prison, upon which I discovered that I had been locked out of administrative sections of all the servers as well as being totally locked out of BME." The original Modblog post was deleted, along with the following post full of supportive comments and a response from Larratt's estraged wife Rachel (comment #88, sorry, no non cache link). The most recent update to the site is a post apologizing for a recent outage, which happened the same time all of this went down. Larratt is currently carrying on his modblogging and interviews at a new site bodytwo.com

Also starring, as the context for the use of this word, and as it so often does these days, is the internet. Specifically BMEzine, the acme of body-modification exhibition sites; yes, one person in twenty has a third nipple, and yes a goodly number of them has piercings there. Mom Convicted Over Piercing Gone Wrong

Mass infection from bellybuttonpiercing was left untreated. This Mom, seemingly neglectful, ignored her teen's self-piercing gone wrong, and now faces up to 5 years in prison. I let my teen daughter get a small tattoo and nose piercing. I have a tattoo, but no piercings. All done by trusted professionals in sterile environments. Another teen's tongue piercing causes ‘suicide disease.’ Maybe a little upfront information is a good idea before proceeding. What are your piercing / tattoo experiences?

Getting Pierced Privately in Georgia? Female? Go to Jail. In a stunning case of "And Another Thing" gone horribly wrong, the Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill today that was meant to criminalize a range of notorious mutilations, especially in cases where defendants have cited ritual tradition. The primary benefactors of this bill are female victims of such crimes under the age of 18, though the bill will extend to include women of all ages. This was all well and good, until someone apparently muttered the word "piercing." The very thought left Rep Bill Heath "slack-jawed" and so an amendment was tacked on to the existing bill. With the amendment added, the bill passed with a vote of 160-0.

The newly amended bill, if passed by the Georgia Senate, will make female genital piercing as much of a crime as the far more heinous mutilations in the original bill.

Vault.com did a survey regarding tatoos and piercings in the workplace. Half of the managers responding to Vault.com's survey on body modification in the workplace said they were less likely to hire someone with visible tattoos or body piercings.
