Any monster looks several times cooler if it's oozing something

Bogleech (previously) is currently providing in-depth reviews of every. single. Pokémon. Not every Pokémon game - every individual Pokémon. He's up to #374 now. He can also tell you all about the real-world biological organisms behind such Pokémon as Parasect, Weepinbell, and his beloved Gloom, and explain why they are both grosser and more charming than you ever suspected.

Happy Pokemon Day!

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the first Pokemon games releasing in Japan. 20 years ago today, a set of unsuspecting video games would be released that would end up spawning so many sequels, a long running anime series, a collectible card game and numerous spin offs. [more inside]

I thought we were giving the world what it wanted. But we destroyed it.

On September 9th, 2015, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company announced Pokémon GO, a multiplayer location-aware mobile game for iOS and Android, due for release in 2016. Their development partner, Niantic, recently revealed details on how the game will work and how it will draw upon their experience with their earlier location aware game, Ingress [Ingress, Previously: 1, 2]. Civilization 2.0: Now With More Briquettes

So, the apocalypse happens, in whatever flavor you prefer, and eventually our descendants (or the cockroaches') are poised to inherit the earth. Lucky for them, we've left a nice cache of information for them (previously on the Blue) so that they don't have to reinvent the wheel or Pokemon or whatever. Question is, will they be able to do that--or, rather, how difficult would it be to do that--if we use up all the fossil fuels first? [more inside]

Gotta catch 'em all

As an archivist, my ethical duty is to maintain those objects of intrinsic value to future generations. I’ve often found that others assume my profession is focused on facts and figures, the hard data from which a census or otherwise lifeless historical record can be drawn. Such data will inform one on how a people survived. As important as this data is, it cannot tell you how a people dreamed. [more inside]

The Top Nerdy

Yes, there are a LOT of Year-End Best Of Lists (some people say too many - at the same time they make up consensus lists).
But sometimes it just helps to give a 'Best Of' list a different angle, like THE TOP 20 NERDY THINGS OF 2014, which includes two appearances by Neil deGrasse Tyson (#14 and #6) and two "G.I.Joe-related" items (#16 and #8). [more inside]

Pokémon Zeta & Omicron are not ROM hacks. They are standalone fan-made Pokémon clones created with RPG Maker XP, featuring around 80 hours of gameplay, 2 regions with 12 gyms, a coherent storyline, "tons" of endgame content, Shadow Pokémon, Delta Pokémon, all 649 Pokémon through gen V, secret bases, mega evolutions, challenge modes (previously), and sometimes quirky dialogue. Though still in beta, it's a playable game [YT], patches to which have slowed. Each new version is posted to the sub-Reddit /r/pokemonzetaomicron.

The Wisdom of Crowds

For the past three days, the world of streaming gaming has been riveted by an unlikely phenomenon: Twitch Plays Pokemon. Consisting of a live Twitch.TV chatroom hooked up to a classic Game Boy emulation of Pokémon Red, the program is set to recognize a limited number of commands and execute them in real time, allowing an audience of tens of thousands to collectively control the action as they watch. An astonishing amount of progress has been made, including the dramatic last-second defeat of a third gym leader (GIF) and the solution of a notoriously tricky puzzle on the very first attempt. But all for naught, it seems, as Team Twitch finds itself hilariously stranded on the ledges of Route 19 where, as one viewer explained, "they basically have to walk a small path for about ten spaces without anyone pushing down and jumping Red off the ledge," a grim democratic reality the dedicated subreddit /r/twitchplayspokemon has had all kinds of fun with over the last dozen ludicrous hours.

"If the end is right it justifies the beans."

The Online Musical started as a 2010 University of Virginia student project to create an interactive online musical based on audience feeback , called Musical: The Online Musical. It continued after that project finished, moving on to mini musicals (Thomas Jefferson: The Musical, Pokemon: The Musical, Where's Waldo?: The Musical), and other musical works (a dub step treatment of Les Miserables). Their most recent project is less musical, more dystopian: The Beanie Baby Hunger Games. [more inside]

Life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, it's never easy when there is so much on the line.

Pokemon: Game Freak and Nintendo's series of cartoony monster-training RPGs that kicked off huge crazes among the kids of both Japan and the U.S. In these games, children take up the calling of "Pokemon trainers," capturing the titular animals and then keeping them as pets or fighting them against either wild pokemon or those of other trainers.
Nobunaga's Ambition: An even-longer-running classic series of historical strategy/simulation games produced by Koei. Noted for their realistic approach, their difficulty, and a high level of dryness. You grow rice, distribute it to your population to keep them happy, send out spies, guard against assassins, raise and train a military, and ultimately attempt to unite feudal-era Japan.
And now... Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition, a Real Thing that will Soon Exist.

Pokemon just got much much harder

Rule no. 1: Catch the first Pokemon you encounter in each route/cave/whatever and nothing else. If you fail to catch it, too bad, continue onwards. Rule no. 2: If your Pokemon faints, consider it dead and release it. In 2010 a 4chan user posted these rules for making Pokemon more of a challenge, as well as a short comic on his exploits in a world where Pokemon can die. The "Nuzlocke" comic became wildly popular, spawning dozens of elaborate offshoots in comic and story form. [more inside]
