Don't you want to watch a critically acclaimed chef get drunk and shout about the wonders of ham? (video is NSFW, due to cursing) David Chang, chef/owner of the Momofuku family of restaurants in New York, has garnered a lot of praise and awards for his food, including two Michelin stars and multiple James Beard awards. His personality, characterized by an apparent lack of care for the judgement of other people and refreshing honesty, has gained him notable celebrity, especially for a chef that doesn't star on The Food Network. He's been profiled recently by NPR on All Things Considered and Weekend Edition, telling stories from his new book. In the past, he's been covered by The New Yorker, the New York Times, and New York Magazine. He's also appeared on Charlie Rose. It's hard not to love a man who thinks and talks this openly about himself and his craft, or one who sits down with Anthony Bourdain to call bullshit on various things. And seriously, this looks delicious.

Kaiju Shakedown points us to the trailer of Ramen Girl, starring Brittany Murphy as a American who decides to learn how to make the perfect bowl of ramen noodles (what?!?!) after she is dumped by her boyfriend in Tokyo. Tampopo this isn't. Hat tip to Ivan Ramen, who is the real deal foreigner who has a succesful ramen joint in Tokyo. "You know, we spent $3 million to study the DNA of bears in Montana. I don't know if that was a criminal issue or a paternal issue..." (previously) The infamous bear study bought up by McCain in the first debate is one of his favourite pork barrel examples, but little actual information is given about the study. Here is the website giving details about the project, with more info, a quick fact sheet and a podcast. This is one of the rare times when a candidate will air an opinion on science in a popular setting.... However, several websites have been trying to get into the details of the candidates policies on science and technology. The science debate (previously) looks dead in the water, but they did manage to get the candidates to answer 14 questions by email. Nature, a leading scientific journal, has a special section comparing the candidates scientific credentials and a section of questions that were answered by Obama but not responded to by McCain. Key quote from Obama "I believe in evolution, and I support the strong consensus of the scientific community that evolution is scientifically validated." A more popular version is "geek the vote" from popular mechanics. McCain has gained praise for promising to introduce a science advisor, but with 71 Nobel prize winners endorsing Obama and his science plan, it is clear where the consensus lies.

So You Think The V-22 Is Ridiculous? [previously] Let me present you its dumb brother, the DuPont Aerospace DP-2. (No relation to the chemical conglomerate). Although successively panned in reviews by the US Navy in 1986, and DARPA in 1990, and shifted to the Office of Naval Research when DARPA uncharacteristically refused in 1997 to spend its allocated funds, the DP-2's protracted development has kept receiving Congressional earmarks for over twenty years, supported by Representatives Duncan Hunter (R.-Calif.) and Dana Rohrabacher (R.-Calif.), as well as former Representative Christopher Cox (you guessed it...R.-Calif.), nowadays Chairman of the Securities Exchange Commission. Hunter, in particular, has steadfastedly defended the contraption, despite some slight design flaws, like that of incinerating soldiers. His support, however, may have less to do with the alleged ability of the concept than with the equally steadfast campaign funding he has received from DuPont. This month, however, the efforts of DuPont, Hunter, Cox and Rohrabacher have finally been rewarded with a first successful (tethered) hover. It may however be too late.

Louisiana Leads in Army Corps Spending, but Millions Had Nothing to Do With Floods
In Katrina's wake, Louisiana politicians and other critics have complained about paltry funding for the Army Corps in general and Louisiana projects in particular. But over the five years of President Bush's administration, Louisiana has received far more money for Corps civil works projects than any other state, about $1.9 billion; California was a distant second with less than $1.4 billion, even though its population is more than seven times as large.

[H]undreds of millions of dollars have gone to unrelated water projects demanded by the state's congressional delegation and approved by the Corps, often after economic analyses that turned out to be inaccurate. Despite a series of independent investigations criticizing Army Corps construction projects as wasteful pork-barrel spending, Louisiana's representatives have kept bringing home the bacon.
