Talking Cards

Used as postcards and for advertising, phono postcards were a single-sided phonograph record stuck on a card with a hole punched through. The Weco cards stand out with their use of photography (with the clothes sometimes painted on) and see-through vinyl.

Postcrossing

you've got new postcrossed mail You have heard of geocaching. You have heard of Bookcrossing. Here comes Postcrossing.

The main idea is that: if you send a postcard, you'll receive at least one back, from a random Postcrosser from somewhere in the world. The goal of postcrossing is to allow people to receive postcards from all over the world, for free. Well, for the price of the stamp you put on the postcards you need to send if you wish to get one from someone you never met.

You can have up to 5 postcards traveling at any single time. Every time one of the postcards you sent is registered, you can request another address.

I bought my first postcrossed postcard in Brussels' touristy district today and will mail it somewhere in Finland tomorrow.

Canal Zone Images is a collection of stories and images about the Panama Canal Zone. Did you know that the construction workers were paid in gold and silver ('spiggoty' dollars)? "Paper money was not used on the pay car at all. In the first place, there was always a danger of its blowing away, and in the second place paper money in the hands of negro workmen soon assumed a most unsanitary condition." A couple more: The story of Submarine 0-5 [4 times! From our very own cedar comes this amazing collection of several hundred postcards sent between 1900 and 1910 by his family. In the stall or store of a postcard dealer, they might be filed under the name of the individual animal, or under ''Dressed Animals.'' They may also be described as postcards depicting ''Animals Doing People Things.'' but regardless of how they are described, the postcards known by collectors as Mainzer Dressed Animal Cards offer a colorful variety that can rarely be matched by other collectible postcard series.">Dressed Cats Series postcard. I have collected them in a desultory way over the years but never thought to Google Alfred Mainzer until tonight.*
*Note that all of these are personal sites and two are Tripod and GeoCities hosted, so treat kindly and tread gently. No direct links, please. coughmaybemirrothemcough

What says love like video art? Enjoy these trés bizarre video "postcards", then send them to a significant other. Or don't. Whatever. I just looked at 'em, personally. They're great though. [Quicktime required.]

Postcard Exchange

Do you know a elementary teacher? Rob from Cockeyed.com wants to create an interstate postcard exchange! If you ask me (no-one has) this is far too good an exercise to go to waste, so if you know a 3rd - 5th Grade teacher, point them in the direction of this!
