Hobbits would only drink ales since lagers are not found on Middle-earth

So, you want to eat like a hobbit do you? The big old dragon of Middle-Earth recipes is the charmingly retro 'Middle-Earth Recipes' (now with a more modern and photo-friendly blog version ) from which NPR's Beth Accomando has complied an all-day feasting menu suitable for marathon watching (or reading) assorted Lord Of The Rings media while Recipewise sticks to foods served by Bilbo in The Hobbit itself and explains the Victorian convention of high vs. low tea. (Author Diane Duane's own Hobbit-inspired recipe, Took Family Seed Cake can be made with poppy rather than caraway seed if that's your thing) Need something to do while digesting? Why not read about the history and meaning of the rural comfort food in Tolkien at Strange Horizons " Well Stocked Larders: Food And Diet Of Hobbits" by Stephanie Green.

Right About Now / Funk Soul ... Uncle?

Depending on your age, you may have heard him as Shredder or any one of a handful of characters for which he provided voices, but arguably James Avery's most famous role is as Uncle Phil on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." When Uncle Phil goes on a diet, he's orgasmic at the very thought of Thanksgiving dinner. Well, someone saw this clip and thought: "Why not?" Of all the bizarre things to remix, this has to be the one of the oddest — and although the visual is nothing to write home about, the audio must be heard to be believed. (Separating this into its separate components, there are also very odd remixes of Fresh Prince, and very odd remixes of spuds.)

Just when you thought you knew everything about potatoes

Upon trying to find out how long it takes to bake a potato, I stumble across how to bake a potato dot com. In great detail, with pictures and explanations, the web master takes us through the process of baking a spud.

Of course, there are loads of other resources out there, on baking in the microwave, in the oven, on the barbie or by using potatoes in a variety of other ways. And if that doesn't satisfy your curiosity, Google should (2).

I say protato, you say...

Protato. India has developed a genetically modified potato that contains 30% more protein than your standard spud. The hope is to use the 'protato' to combat malnutrition. Needless to say, there are those who dissent from the GM spud being touted as a cure-all for world hunger.
