"The Magazineer is a blog about magazine design and print culture, written by people who love, and make, magazines." {The most recent entry is by Jess, actually.}

Prominent blogger Derek Powazek, who left his JPG project under prickly conditions, started a new project called Pixish. Pixish allows users to create open calls for submissions from designers, photographers and other artists who then offer up their work for comparison. Voting on the work reveals a winner, who then receives a prize outlined in the initial post. Following a post by Adam Howell that claims Pixish is nothing more than a 2.0 portal for spec work, a debate has emerged online as to whether Powazek's latest foray is a formula for ill-will amongst the design community.

JPG, an online/offline photo magazine "for photographers like us who fall somewhere in between the strict definitions of 'amateur' and 'professional,'" launches today. The impresario of JPG is Derek Powazek, the author of Design for Community, who has a long history of building interesting Web-based community sites, including the personal-storytelling site Fray.com (currently on hiatus). The co-founder of JPG, Powazek's wife Heather Champ, created the haunting Mirror Project.

Powazek on Metafilter Not sure if this has been posted before, but I just found it on a new sub-site of Communication Arts that appears to be more focussed on web design. Derek is writing a book on online communities, but I still got the impression that the interviewer didn't know who he was.

Doesn't this seem like a kvetch clone (or copy-cat) to you?

Not to extend his 15 minutes of infamy, but, he has a story to tell. Just hear him out.

Considering Copyright Mr. Powazek brings up a very good point about copyright and how it applies to web design vs. John Perry Barlow's idea's about how copyright applies to the future. From the tone of Derek's last few posts, I'd say someone's been ripping off his designs...again.

Good luck with the new book, Derek. You will be missed at Pyra HQ.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Derek has left the building. While I have been amused by reading the life of Derek Powazek, once and a while, I think he has made a sound decision. I really appreciate his last question, who is a blog for? Reminds me of the first question from my Journalism 101 professor: "Is art for art's sake?"

Derek's long overdue explanation of the "I hate weblogs" comment. It's a good one.

This guy gets in pissing contest with that guy, then this guy's new widget looks a lot like these folks' widget (at least that's what this other guy says). And now these folks give that guy a job.
I love the web! (Just not for the right reasons)

Derek put some photos from the Fray Day online, and is working on getting the audio together. In the meantime, enjoy a picture of me at the festivities (I'm the guy walking towards the left in between the two people looking at the small house). My favorite image and memory from the Fray Day is this, the caption says it all.
