The Godfathers of German Gothic and the Ghostriders of German Gothic gave voice to lesser known acts of the punk-punk era. Collated initially by Schwarze szene notable band musician Jay Kay it was an attempt to collect the mainland European 'gothic' experience. Five volumes were issued between 1994 and 2000 on Germany's SPV Records. The series has never been reissued, and although there is often little information about the various acts in English on the Internet (or in German), many of the songs have been uploaded to YouTube. On May 22nd, 2011 at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, a number of bands put on a concert hosted by Eugene Mirman and Janeane Garofalo to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the publication of Michael Azerrad's Our Band Could Be Your Life. NPR audio timecodes on the left for easier perusal of first link, video footage and relevant info in links below (NB: where available, some incomplete/missing video sets, YMMV): [00:30] Dirty Projectors played Black Flag, although in a much more straightforward manner than the reinterpretive vein of their 2007 "covers" record Rise Above. [10:10] Delicate Steve (with Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth and Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav) played Minutemen. [23:10] Citay played Mission of Burma, but unfortunately no one filmed it or at least uploaded it, which is unfortunate as Citay are actually pretty good. [33:15] Ted Leo played Minor Threat with a reel-to-reel tape machine for a backing band. [43:18] Grooms played Husker Du, and also did a brief interview with Michael Azerrad on their blog. [52:23] Titus Andronicus with Craig Finn of The Hold Steady played Replacements. It follows projects like Do The Pop, Lethal Weapons, and Inner City Sound in documenting Australia's fertile underground rock and roll scene. While those blogs and books are focused on the past, I-94 Bar is documenting the scene as it stands today and interviewing the various survivors.

The Wipers were a tight and catchy post-punk band founded in Portland in 1977. Today they're best known for covers by The Vivian Girls and Nirvana (Return of the Rat, and esp. D7 - studio, live 1 2 3 4). But the originals are pretty interesting too. John Peel said of their first album "Is It Real": " 'It is one of punk's great albums by perhaps the most unappreciated band of all time'." wiki. Greg Sage's dad owned record pressing equipment and he made albums for friends in high school. He originally hoped to never appear live, and had a thing against videotaping, so live footage (start at 1:30) is rare, esp. early on. Early Wipers (tight, short, surfy, 77-81). Punkcast is a long running series of videos of live underground music in NYC shot by Joly MacFie. Each video is usually one song. The Internet Archive hosts its videos and offers downloads in a variety of formats. MacFie also has a YouTube channel with 480 videos and a video podcast [iTunes link, feedburner link]. Here are a few bands that caught my fancy: The Icicles and The Besties, The Slits (1, 2 ), Andrew W. Dan Treacy/Television Personalities documentary

Dan Treacy and his band Television Personalities have had a long and storied history. Here's a nice little documentary (part one, two, three, four) on 'em. Formed in 1977 during the first wave of UK punk, they put out records on a fairly regular basis until the turn of the millennium, when Treacy seemed to fall off the face of the planet. He was eventually tracked down to a British prison ship, where he was serving time for a slew of petty crimes related to his mental illness and drug addiction. Upon his release in 2004, he reformed the group with long-time member Ed Ball (also of Teenage Filmstars/the Times) and returned to playing shows and putting out new material, starting with an... interesting choice for a single, the haunting 'All the Young Children on Crack'. Here's a good, concise history of the group. 'Painted Word', my personal favorite TVPs song. 'Part Time Punks', probably the group's best known song. 'I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives'. Fun trivia: the TVPs were on tour as David Gilmour's(!) supporting act in the mid 80's when Treacy took it upon himself to read the reclusive Barrett's home address to a crowd of thousands. Gilmour was not amused and the group got the sack.

The site French New-Wave isn't what you think it is. Neither dedicated to the film movement nor the band Nouvelle Vague it instead catalogs French new wave music from the 1980's. It has interviews and much other information, but the real treasure is the media section which includes a photo gallery, streaming radio and, most importantly, links to sites where you can listen to French new wave songs (unfortunately, some of the links don't work).
