Ahmet Ertegun profiled by George W. S. Trow in 1978

Ahmet Ertegun was profiled by George W. S. Trow in The New Yorker in a classic piece back in 1978. Ertegun was the son of the Turkish ambassador to the US and he remained behind in D.C. studying medieval philosophy at Georgetown. Instead of devoting himself to his studies he founded Atlantic Records with his friend Herb Abramson. Trow charted how Ertegun moved from tramping through muddy, Louisiana fields in search of hot new sounds to the whirl of Studio 54. Below the cut are links to the songs mentioned in the article, as best as I could find, in the order in which they appear. Here's a performance by Boyd Raeburn and His Orchestra who recorded The Lady is a Tramp and How High the Moon for Atlantic, here's Jaye P. Morgan doing the former and Les Paul and Mary Ford the latter.

Hungary may be the gloomiest country on earth. Believed by its people to be suffering from a centuries long curse, it's most famous modern musical export is probably the "Hungarian Suicide Song" - Gloomy Sunday. Originally popularized by Billie Holiday in the US (with an upbeat ending tacked onto the original lyrics), it's been covered dozens of times since then. From Rolling Stone, listen to a selection of twenty essential Wexler productions. Unfortunately, these files are available to US ears only, and also, be warned: you might get a supremely annoying audio ad popout. I got one...

Here's a selection of tunes that, in one way or another, were brought to you by Jerry Wexler:

What'd I Say, Ray Charles (the original Wexler-produced recording)
I Got a Woman, Ray Charles (the original Wexler-produced recording)
Green Onions, Booker T and the MGs
In the Midnight Hour, Wilson Pickett
Tipitina, Professor Longhair

And from the incomparable Aretha Franklin (all of these live performances are sheer joy):

Chain of Fools
Chain of Fools
Baby I Love You...

And that's just a tiny tip of the iceberg. Rest in peace, Jerry Wexler.

And props to stupidsexyFlanders, who originally brought Wexler's passing to our attention here.
