Color Spaces:

It has been known for some time that colors can be described by three numbers. If I show you light of a certain color and ask you to match it by combining lights of three other colors and varying their intensities, you'll typically be able to find a combination that looks indistinguishable. But the wavelengths you combine might be very different from the wavelengths I showed you. Light of the wavelength corresponding to yellow and light of the right combination of red and green wavelengths will look the same, even though they are physically quite different.

THE PROBLEM OF THE AMBER SIGNAL LIGHT IN TRAFFIC FLOW (PDF), published in 1959, is the origin of the yellow interval duration equation for traffic lights. But in China, as of Tuesday, yellow lights are now considered functionally the same as red lights, prompting outcries in the local media that it is not only unfair, but actually violates Newton's First Law of Motion. It also violates the history of traffic lights... Our system of traffic lights is often attributed to the prolific African-American inventor Garrett Morgan, but his 1923 patent didn't include a yellow light. Even before that, concerned policeman William Potts installed multicolored (red, amber, green) traffic signals at this intersection in Detroit in 1920, inspired by railroad signals. The yellow light didn't become standard until the 1935 edition (page 71) of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (which has its own history and evolution.) While the precise timing of yellow lights is usually intended to prevent accidents, it's not unusual for that timing to be adjusted for profit.

With digital cinema on the rise, and DSLR video shooting becoming increasingly popular for low-budget and independent film making, expectations were high for Canon's big announcement at Paramount Studios today. And Canon delivered, the C300 is a DSLR-like camera that uses Canon or PL mount lenses (two different models), with no autofocus, S35mm sensor size, full HD to a 50Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 stream, shipping in January 2012 for $20,000. They also announced a new range of high-resolution affordable zoom and prime lenses for cinema use, and, as an extra bonus, they announced they were developing a similar camera that could record 4k video for release at some time in the future. It all looked like a big win for Canon... But, a few hours later, the always controversial and disruptive Red Digital Cinema, makers of the ubiquitous Red One and the relatively new 5K, 120fps EPIC, announced the EPIC's little sister, based on the same sensor, the Scarlet, a camera that also uses Canon or PL mount lenses, with an interchangeable lens mount, autofocus on Canon lenses, S35mm sensor size, 4k video (with HDR option) and 5k stills to a 400Mbps 16-bit compressed raw stream, shipping December 1st for $9,750 for the body (under $14,000 for a full, ready to shoot kit with media, card reader and 5" touchscreen, minus the lenses).

Yesterday, July 6th, was the first day of San Fermín or Sanfermines in Pamplona, in celebration of Saint Fermín. As is tradition, it starts with a rocket, and turns into a giant, joyous, drunken party in the streets. The events to follow have changed over the centuries, with the addition of Riau Riau in 1914 (actual singing, words and lyrics, Spanish Wiki page with lyrics) in 1914, and most recently, leaving of candles and red bandanas at the Church of San Lorenzo, following the singing of Pobre de Mi. Oh, and there's the running of the bulls (route, photos from yesterday's run, previously). Side notes: Saint Fermín's holy day is actually September 25, and celebrated on October 10, but the celebrations in Pamplona were joined with the traditional summer harvest festival and the celebration of the bulls, because October never had nice weather. SanFermin.com has loads of history and current coverage, and RTVE.es has more recent coverage of Sanfermines in Spanish.

Chi-Com Comeback? July 1st is the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (Official English website). Since 1979, China has been on a course of economic reform, first initiated by Deng Xiaoping, who climbed from disgrace during the Cultural Revolution to lead China away from a communist economy. Now, however, with the anniversary of the Party coming up, at least in Chongqing, the fastest growing city on the planet which 32 million people call home, the East may once again be Red. The local television station has stopped playing sitcoms and is now showing only "revolutionary" programs--including "Red Star Over China" which it is exclusively premiering. The local propaganda group has set up a "red" twitter feed. Bo Xilai, the Party Secretary in Chongqing, and a Politburo member, has brought back the old slogans, and has used "Red SMS" to transmit the sayings of Chairman Mao to the people of Chongqing since 2009. Xilai's drive mirrors the larger "Red Culture" initiative of the Chinese government. The movement includes a "Red Olympics" complete with "storming the blockhouse" and other military-style events. Other changes reminiscent of the past are more ominous, however. Xilai also initiated a "Strike Hard" campaign aimed at ridding Chongqing of "gangsters." Bejing University Law Professor He Weifang condemned the "the furious unfolding of movement-style (运动式) law enforcement and administration of justice." in his "A Letter to the Legal Professionals in Chongqing." According to Weifang, local authorities resorted to collaboration between prosecutors and judges to decide the cases ahead of time and apply “Chongqing speed” (重庆速度) to the administration of justice.

The average human eye has three types of cone cells, each of which is sensitive to a different wavelength range of visible light. The difference in the relative signal from the three cones allows us to distinguish colors. Unfortunately, since these sensitivity ranges overlap, there are some combinations of signals from the cones that can't be created by light emitted from a real object. These are the so-called "imaginary colors". However, by selectively overstimulating one or more types of cone, we can still perceive these colors; this is the principle behind the Eclipse of Titan, an optical illusion which produces both a green and a cyan that don't otherwise appear in nature. (Similar effects can be seen in the Eclipses of Mars, Neptune, and Triton.) For more on the correlation between wavelength and perception, you might check out Giordano Beretta's Understanding Color, a very readable introductory short course.
