Want to redesign the Senate Web site? The Senate is soliciting proposals for a new CMS and complete overhaul of the current site, which hasn't changed much (or added many features) lately. It does not include individual senators' or committees' sites.

Chicago to enlist graphic designers for friendlier ballots. [free reg may be req'd] There's been a bunch of discussion about the usability problems with various voting systems, notably punch-card ballots. Chicago didn't have anything as dramatic as a "butterfly" prexy ballot or two pages' worth of candidates, but we still had close to 120,000 discards from 2.1 million votes -- and when compared with jurisdictions using other systems, there's little evidence to suggest that voters are skipping the presidential ballot. That's just how bad manual punch card technology is. Even if we can't get rid of them just yet, at least we can make sure they aren't confusing. Did I just post the twenty-sixth link on Metafilter today? GO AWAY. METAFILTER IS FULL. :)

Everything old is new again. I ranted on this a little in my blog, but here is the crux: why does something that looks like a Commodore 8-bit demo program earn respect as a good web design? The font is even a direct lift of the 64's built-in font. I find it kind of funny that we're trying to duplicate stuff that was done well over a decade ago, but because it's on the web, it's good design.

Love that Blogger redesign. Normally I wouldn't blog about this here, but they leave me little choice. (Other than jumping ship and kludging some scripts together). I want my free service that I pay nothing for and should be grateful just to have now!

On a serious note, I love Blogger, think it's great, and use it myself, but is it bad to become dependant on a third party tool? You've basically placed the life of your site at the whim of the tool provider. Granted, Ev, Meg, PB, [that fourth guy], Matt, and now Jack seem like pretty nice people to be at the whim of, but wouldn't it be better to do it 'on your own?'

Just thinking out loud, as soon as it's back up I'll go to my little traveled corner of the web and stay there.

That's right folks, Just like everyone else I've gone and redesigned my homepage. Any and all comments are appreciated, especially those on Mac systems as I have no way of testing on that platform. And hey, if you were feeling kind, you could generate me some traffic ;-)

I've always liked webmonkey, it's been one of the finest resources available, but with their recent redesign I can't seem to find things as quickly as I used to. Plus I can't find a link anywhere on the site to their Webmonkey Radio feature. Once a month or so, I remember it exists, and I have to physically type "/radio" after webmonkey.com to see it. I missed a couple episodes, so now I've got some webmonkey-radio-catching-up to do.

Hmm...this is weird. Recently, RealNetworks split their site into two distinct sites. Real.com caters to the general internet user and focuses mainly on the new RealPlayer 7 (which I didn't even know came out this month), and they've moved all their content creation stuff to RealNetworks.com. What I find odd about this is I'm used to their old unified site, so when I stumbled upon an article about the new player at Realnetworks.com, I couldn't find any place to download the new player. They don't even mention it on their products page!
