Last week, Eddy Temple Morris, a DJ on UK radio station XFM, challenged Twitter to remix as many songs as possible into 10 minutes. The previous record was held by Wizard of Deekline and Wizard - it is now held by rapper, producer and all-round renaissance man Akira the Don, who managed to fit a staggering 210 tracks into 1/6 of an hour. Final Fantasy IV remix project. This week the videogame music rearrangement site, OCRemix.org, released a new project covering Nobuo Uematsu's soundtrack to FFIV (originally FFII in the US). FFIV's was the first game soundtrack I fell in love with, back in 2nd grade. Maybe you feel the same. The musicians have generally eschewed crowd-pleasing statements of the original's iconic themes, which is . . . bittersweet. Try

this cafe-vibe take on Rydia's theme,
this rhythmically fractured version of the sweet "Welcome to Our Town,"
"Into the Darkness" transposed and remade as "Step into the Light,"
or this slight, anti-triumphal take on the series's traditional victory fanfare.

Metafilter is certainly no stranger to music mashups, or even live music mashups, but a few artists are taking things a step further with live music and video mashups. Not prerecorded mashups of live music and video, but live performances of DJs (often calling themselves "VJs") mashing up music and video together on the fly. Here's the roster of artists I've found so far: Eclectic Method* - Live at NYCWTF 2009 DJ Le Clown Video Circus - Live at Transmusicales 2008 [long-loading, easily navigable flash interface] Mike Relm - At Youtube Live VJ Hi-Grade Thriftshop XL DVDJs Wanna catch these guys live? Most of the artists have tour dates listed in the above-linked websites, but you can also find info at Bootie [see left sidebar for more cities] and Node.London. Got skillz? Here are two introductory videos that explain what's going on. You might also want to brush up on your fair use. It seems like there are two ways these artists are doing it. The first is to keep the video and audio linked together, instead of mixing 2+ audio tracks and 2+ video tracks separately. For example, if you mix two music videos together, you're essentially dealing with two audio/video tracks instead of A + A + V + V, since the video part of a music video is already synced to the music on the DVDs you're using. The second way is to manage four totally separate streams of media, so that the VJ has to beatmatch the music as well as sync it with video, on the fly. This is more than just pre-show cutting and syncing videoclips together, though: one of the Eclectic Method folks mentioned that they often do it in near-real-time, taking just-aired TV and cutting and mixing it at their live shows. That second introductory video, above, also gives a sense of everything this method requires the VJ to manage. Inspiration for this post comes from Flatluigi's post on live looping. I wrote this as a separate post since it seemed like it would have been a derail. *Full disclosure: I've done some work for Eclectic Method, but it was pro bono and I am not a member of the group.

The project originated at Overclocked Remix, a site dedicated to album en de a v o r s of this sort. Of course there are others doing this as well, the freeware Jump'n'Run Doukotsu Monogatari (Cave Story) for example got this treatment. Not as albums, but SID tunes have been remixed a lot (e.g. here, here) and by Machinae Supremacy. Would you like a radio station with this music to tune into? You've got it.

Inspired by comments Brian Eno made in his book A Year with Swollen Appendices, Duncan Sheik released White Limousine with two discs: One, a CD labeled Mine and the other a DVD labeled Yours. The former contains his stereo mixes, while the latter contains WAV files of the individual elements of the mixes for each song. Sheik is requesting that people remix his CD to their liking, and has even provided a place for people to upload their efforts. The best remixes will be streamed on the remix site, and some will even be released as downloads.

Ruins Pet Sounds" release from earlier in the year .... this ruined release exists to be compared and contrasted to the original album and its artistic competitor Pet Sounds. The original classic is recontextualised through the humour and vision of these artists whose approaches to the tracks aims to re-examine Pepper's through a filter of 2005 technology.

thepartyparty.com hosts a set of mindblowingly amazing mixes using the recorded speech of American political figures -- mostly President Bush, but others, like Hilary Clinton and Gov. Schwarzenegger, both make appearances. It's a brilliant exercise in free speech, using the words of the administration against them, especially in the middle and later parts of Who's The Nigga? (Streaming m3u and downloadable mp3.) And did I mention it rocks? Because it rocks- after it breaks your head completely. You must listen to this.

I tend to think the album is a bit overrated, but 'Chicago' is gorgeous.

It's not quite like Hippocamp Ruins Pet Sounds (previously on Mefi) -- it's not nearly as noisy, and not quite as good, although it's still worth checking out, particularly "Chi-Town" (from "Chicago"), "Zombies" (from "They Are Night Zombies!! Australian scientist Cameron Jones puts nanocrystals on the bottom of his CDs. And prints fractals on them. And grows bacteria, yeasts, and fungi on them.
