Last week, Eddy Temple Morris, a DJ on UK radio station XFM, challenged Twitter to remix as many songs as possible into 10 minutes. The previous record was held by Wizard of Deekline and Wizard - it is now held by rapper, producer and all-round renaissance man Akira the Don, who managed to fit a staggering 210 tracks into 1/6 of an hour. Final Fantasy IV remix project. This week the videogame music rearrangement site, OCRemix.org, released a new project covering Nobuo Uematsu's soundtrack to FFIV (originally FFII in the US). FFIV's was the first game soundtrack I fell in love with, back in 2nd grade. Maybe you feel the same. The musicians have generally eschewed crowd-pleasing statements of the original's iconic themes, which is . . . bittersweet. Try

this rhythmically fractured version of the sweet "Welcome to Our Town,"
"Into the Darkness" transposed and remade as "Step into the Light,"
or this slight, anti-triumphal take on the series's traditional victory fanfare.

In Buffy Vs. Edward (Twilight Remixed), Edward Cullen from the Twilight Series meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Sunnydale High. It's an example of transformative storytelling serving as a visual critique of Edward's character and generally creepy behavior. I'll admit it borders on LOLneocons, but it really takes it to a truly amazing level, reminiscent of the media outlets depicted in 1984, to see Salon.com editor-in-chief Joan Walsh's appearance on The O'Reilly Factor and then compare it with Bill O'Reilly's "remix" of the interview which actually aired. We already knew we were in the age of malleable media, but ... (See also Gawker's summary of what techniques Walsh employed to come out on top, which are generally useful in life, too.) Metafilter is certainly no stranger to music mashups, or even live music mashups, but a few artists are taking things a step further with live music and video mashups. Not prerecorded mashups of live music and video, but live performances of DJs (often calling themselves "VJs") mashing up music and video together on the fly. Here's the roster of artists I've found so far: Eclectic Method* - Live at NYCWTF 2009 DJ Le Clown Video Circus - Live at Transmusicales 2008 [long-loading, easily navigable flash interface] Mike Relm - At Youtube Live VJ Hi-Grade Thriftshop XL DVDJs Wanna catch these guys live? Most of the artists have tour dates listed in the above-linked websites, but you can also find info at Bootie [see left sidebar for more cities] and Node.London. Got skillz? Here are two introductory videos that explain what's going on. You might also want to brush up on your fair use. It seems like there are two ways these artists are doing it. The first is to keep the video and audio linked together, instead of mixing 2+ audio tracks and 2+ video tracks separately. For example, if you mix two music videos together, you're essentially dealing with two audio/video tracks instead of A + A + V + V, since the video part of a music video is already synced to the music on the DVDs you're using. The second way is to manage four totally separate streams of media, so that the VJ has to beatmatch the music as well as sync it with video, on the fly. This is more than just pre-show cutting and syncing videoclips together, though: one of the Eclectic Method folks mentioned that they often do it in near-real-time, taking just-aired TV and cutting and mixing it at their live shows. That second introductory video, above, also gives a sense of everything this method requires the VJ to manage. Inspiration for this post comes from Flatluigi's post on live looping. I wrote this as a separate post since it seemed like it would have been a derail. *Full disclosure: I've done some work for Eclectic Method, but it was pro bono and I am not a member of the group.

It's supposed to be manipulated to make it sound all alienweirdness, i obviously can't sing haha." - AMilonakis Diplo released one album, Florida (title track video), but has spent most of his time since that as a globe-trotting producer. Along with his label Mad Decent, he started Heaps Decent, which was initially an Australian initiative to that "intends to seek out young indigenous and underprivileged artists and change Australian club music forever." Diplo and crew make the beats, and the kids sing. The first track was Smash a Kangaroo. The second was Koori Girls. Now Mad Decent chappie Paul Devro is working with Bappi Lahiri (IMDB) to extend extend Heaps Decent to India, which got noticed by local reporters.

What does it all mean? In many ways, today's remix culture kicked off in earnest one weekend in 1983 when two ad men (one a recording engineer) spent a weekend in a studio crafting the first pop record made up entirely of samples in the hopes of winning a $100 remix contest. Although the record became a club hit, there was no way for it to be released commercially as there was no way to clear the 60+ samples within. Nonetheless, two followup records, Lesson 2 (James Brown Mix) and Lesson 3 (History of Hip Hop) were created. Both survived as bootlegs, with Lesson 3 never going out of print despite never being officially released. Until now. Emboldened by Girl Talk's success (and lack of litigation), Illegal Art has released a 2-CD retrospective of Steinski's work. It's amazing how fresh the early stuff sounds today. Get down with the Kersal Massive

As previously mentioned on Metafilter, in 2006, the Kersal Massive, 3 English chavs from Kersal near Manchester made a 44 second rap video on a cell phone (click this one first).
Once it hit YouTube, it inspired parodies and mashups ranging from heavy metal to alternative to dancefloor, an acoustic cover version, a conspiracy theory video, a Kevin Powder interview , and best of all this version. But this one is my favourite. Apologies to people for who this is old news, but I enjoyed discovering this phenomenon today and wanted to share.
