Looking back on Bird Up, Charlie Parker filtered through hip-hop, etc.

About a decade ago, in the mid 1990s jazz remix era, as heard in the Verve Remixed series, one particular compilation of re-visionings stands out: Bird Up. The compilation featured a range of remixers and producers, including the RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan, Dan the Automator, Hal Willner, Me’Shell NdegéOcello, and Serj Tankian of System of a Down, extended "now-familiar bebop soundscapes into new places that are sometimes strange, occasionally brilliant and always invigorating." Pocketknife and Cousin Cole - Tambourine Dreams and beyond

Six and a half years ago, the duo of Pocketknife (Skooby Laposky) and Cousin Cole (aka Cousin Culo) released handful of remixes, edits and re-works, compiled under the name Tambourine Dream (Discogs) on their joint Flagrant Fowl label. The label only lasted a few years, and it seems the duo are now operating alone. Cole/Culo is still solidly in remix/rework territory, with self-selected highlights including the moombahton "So Emotional" & volume 2 mixtape/EPs he made with Phi Unit, while Laposky has ventured into a few tributes to Arthur Russell (Russell, previously), in the form of a mix of Russell's tracks, and releasing a recently discovered track (which he remixed as Pocketknife) on his label, Wilde Calm Records, where he also released an album of "piano not piano" house music created solely with a prepared piano and raw drum programming, under the name Boonlorm.

And now, the story of Cylons who have a plan to take the sky from YOU

Credits mashups or remixes are a Youtube meme with a simple concept: create a intro sequence for one show using the music and style of another show's credits. Some drastically change the story or tone of a series, some play up similarities between two shows, some provide a more glossy intro for shows that originally relied on a title card or an unpopular credits sequence, and some just seem to happen because people really like "Ballad of Serenity." Two By Five

Steve Reich's 3-movement (Fast, Slow, Fast) somewhat jazzy, somewhat rock-ish 2x5 was composed for 5 musicians and prerecorded tape, or two groups of five musicians. Here is Bang On A Can All-Stars (6 of them, no idea why) performing the piece. [20m] Here is a large group of BOACA-S performing it as a 10-piece ensemble. [21m] [more inside]

Remixed classics!

OverClocked ReMix This great site has all sorts of music, redone with vastly superior technology and, at times, an eye towards radical reinterpretation. My old fave Metroid has provided quite a few cool reinterpretations.

Boom Selection

Boom Selection is a music blog, focused on bootlegs. Not old Grateful Dead concerts, but DIY remixes and combinations, with tracks that pit Eminem against Britney, or Grandmaster Flash against Boards of Canada. Crazy stuff. bsx is a helpful filter that whittles it all down to must-listen boots and mixes.

Devil's Pretzel (in my mouth)

Devil's Pretzel (in my mouth)
to the tune of Beck's 'Devil's Haircut'
Something's wrong 'cause my windpipe's closing
chest feels like it's near exploding
earphoned bully boys walking other places
Spot & Barney staring, Nipperesque faces
...a song by Jim Higgins on G.W."s almost self-assassination.

Santa Claus updates his Christmas policy and also prepares to release an explicit remix album. Can ol' Saint Nick possibly knock all of the boy bands off the charts?
