Burlington's Flying Monkeys

Most people visit the city of Burlington, Vermont, for the pleasant waterfront of Lake Champlain, the quirky shops and restaurants on Church Street, and the various cultural benefits that come with being a university town. Those are all the right reasons. I, on the other hand, went to Burlington for the flying monkeys... Monkeys With Wings has the full history of Burlington's flying monkeys, which first appeared as whimsical sculptures made by sculptor Steve Larrabee for the Emerald City (of Oz) Waterbeds store (warning: autoplaying audio). The store closed, and the monkeys moved and multiplied over the years, with six flying monkeys now residing in Burlington.

Stephane Halleux is a French sculpture artist whose work feels like Jules Verne as realized by Tim Burton; the sculptures all share cartoonish steampunk vibe that's really appealing. Sadly, the site is 100% Flash, so no linking to specific favorites, but at the very least the navigation remains fairly straightforward.

Little People is a London street art project featuring tiny statues of people acting out the daily chores of full sized people (tourists, beggars, daydreamers, etc). Reminiscent of crash bonsai, or better yet the tiny food dwelling characters found @ minimiam.

After viewing abstract sculptures by John Chamberlain crafted with materials such as crushed automobile parts, a group of electricians created their own work and placed it alongside Chamberlain's. Is this mad for real? Class warfare? "This was something that wasn't mistaken as a work of art by anyone other than the electricians."

Outdoor Sculptures from Australia. This is a great collection of evocative outdoor sculptures from Australia. The setting is not bad, too. Outdoor art is very well supported in my city (sorry- no images). Is it a big deal where you live?
