The Pianist

Yuja Wang (official site / wikipedia) is a 24-year old, Chinese virtuoso classical pianist who became an overnight sensation in 2007 when she filled in after piano legend Martha Argerich, cancelled a performance with the Boston symphony. Since then, Ms. Wang has become a superstar in her own right, hailed by critics for her precise, passionate performances and lightning-fast technique. But after a recent appearance on-stage in a short red dress and high heels led to a critic's complaint about her outfit, others are now weighing in on whether it is appropriate for a female classical musician to wear revealing clothing. If music be the food of love, play on...

Why music? Music is a human universal, but why did we evolve a desire to create, perform, and enjoy it? From a biological standpoint, does it contribute to survival or, more likely, mate selection and reproduction?

Nick Cave, the Black Crow King, is fifty today

NickCaveFilter: Fifty years ago this very day, Nicholas Edward Cave [previously] crawled from the womb and started to plot.  At 16 he formed his first band which evolved quickly into the Boys Next Door [Shivers].  This in turn mutated into the Birthday Party (1980) who terrorised the post-punk soundscape in Australia and the UK [Release the Bats | Nick the Stripper].  The Birthday Party relocated to England and in 1984 the band imploded in an orgy of drugs and booze.  Shortly after Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds were born [The Ship Song - video & solo live | The Mercy Seat - video & live | Where the Wild Roses Grow], and 23 years and 11 studio albums later (not to mention a best selling book, a great screenplay, some acting and several soundtrack projects) he is still going strong.  But, instead of sitting on his musical laurels he decided to get back to basics and, in 2006, grew a huge moustache and formed Grinderman – a four piece with a primeval hybrid Birthday Party/Bad Seeds sound [No Pussy Blues | Honey Bee].  Fellow Mefites, I ask you to raise a glass to Mr. Cave… And, especially if you are not familiar to his work, don’t forget to “look inside” for my primer on the enigma that is Nick Cave, one of the finest song-writers on the face of this miserable planet. Musical positions

Musical positions. Not safe for a music stand. And really, the triplet bracket belongs in the final measure.

Lodger

www.lodger.tv, the official website of the Finnish band Lodger (wikipedia, myspace), best known for their flash videos about love, death, crime and sex. I love death (flash) has been mentioned previously, but look out for God has rejected the western world (flash) and 24h candy machine (flash). They also made a video (flash) for LeLabo Fragrances, set to the tune of 24h candy machine. All flash movies are NSFW with music, same goes for the myspace link.

Study: teen music causes sex

Sexy music study. A study based on telephone interviews of teenagers finds that sexy music causes sex. Explains the "construction" of the "impulse control center" in the brain. (Too bad they didn't link to a PET scan for greater science-y-ness.)

Crippled Dick Hot Wax!...has reissued "Vampyros Lesbos: Sexadelic Dance Party", a compilation of skewed gogogirlloungefuzzfunk tracks from the films of schlock master Jesus (Jess) Franco. Much props to Mondo Macabre, Synapse Films, and Something Weird Video for ressurecting "classic" fringe cinema. (links are slightly NSFW)

"The right man for the job will be aged between 18 and 21 and will presumably need to demonstrate an abundance of energy and the ability to withstand repeated showers of saliva, the traditional punk rock crowd's sign of respect for performers."

But who is the right man?

Maestro Virtuoso

Maestro Virtuoso Sir Andre Previn, George Solti, Arturo Toscanini, Giuseppe Verdi. "Conductors have the liveliest, longest and most rewarding sex lives of any human organism....Toscanini loved to give as much pleasure as he took, and he lasted long and well into a lascivious old age. For the supreme maestro, sex was not so much a reward as a repayment." Even Verdi was reputed to give "a certain kind of kiss that, somehow, bestowed the benediction of genius on his indulgence." Maybe its that constant exposure to heavenly music, heavy doses of Mendelhsson instead of Sildenafil Nitrate Tablets.

Barry White to Serenade Sharks:

Barry White to Serenade Sharks: Sharks are to be serenaded . . . at The National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham in an experiment to help them mate. His love songs and other romantic tunes will be pumped in to tanks containing dogfish, starry smooth hounds and tope. Just in time for Valentine's Day ;) Thanks again to the fabulous Nutlog.

My hobby? Oh, yes. I used to garden, and collect ancient coins. Now, I just f*ck Rock Stars.

My hobby? Oh, yes. I used to garden, and collect ancient coins. Now, I just f*ck Rock Stars. I think maybe these girls got the wrong message from the movie Almost Famous. At any rate, it seems like this site maps out pretty clearly the best way for a young woman to be used sexually and then discarded by the musician of her choice.
