In an ongoing effort to call out the PR tactic of silence which
started with a focus on SimCity, Rock Paper Shotgun points out that after the public outcry, controversy, and an apology from Deep Silver which concluded "we want to reiterate ... how deeply sorry we are, and that we are committed to making sure this will never happen again", the special edition of Dead Island: Riptide which includes a statue of a woman's severed torso
silently went on sale anyway.

Twenty-four years after the
original,
Maxis (sans
Wil Wright) is rebooting
SimCity. RPS'
preview states that, thanks to the bottom-up approach of the
Glassbox engine, each entity "...will be its own discrete software agent, running its own little simulation of its own little life." In their own
preview, IGN state that having animations reflect behind-the-scenes processes will "[give] the players tangible signals that they need to step in..." However, is there trouble in (simulated) paradise
already?

The official "StreetView" map of China is eerily reminiscent of SimCity, rendered in perfect isometric perspective without a pixel out of place:
Shanghai, the
Forbidden City,
Guangzhou, and
Hong Kong. That hasn't stopped companies from trying to create a more true-to-life photographic alternative: there is coverage of
Hong Kong and
Macau in Google Street View; sanction to cover the rest of China appears to have been given to
City8, which covers 40 cities. (The latter site is in Chinese, but Chrome or language plugins do a decent job of translating the content).

Why we are all Venetians now Witold Rybczynski talks about the changing functions of cities, urban planning and reuse, and the tourism industry where "the urban experience has become a new product of cities."

Simcity 4 and memories of misspent youth You don't need to be a geek to enjoy creating (and destroying) cities in the funky llama-loving world of Simcity. Simcity 4 has just been released, for good or bad. A lot of people seem to have "that game" that sticks with them. Maybe an old console or PC simulator such as Simcity still pops up in your mind once-in-awhile. Do you ever get hungry and say to yourself "Must build more farms."?

The life and times of a game company. While everyone knows
Maxis for the
SimCity games, they've has dabbled in everything from kids' games to
Diablo-like titles. While this isn't a brand new article - it mentions
The Sims in future tense - it is fascinating to see what happened to this unique company.

Today is Friday, the day I get paid, which also happens to be impulse buying day! A few minutes ago, I bought a couple cool things for my palm pilot. Concept Kitchen has a
rubber bumper-type case for the palm, which should be arriving next week. The other impulse buy was
SimCity for the Palm. Thanks to Atelier's cool downloadable distribution, I'm playing SimCity right now.
