Thirty years of community fundraising, flawless makeup, genderbending, and hysterically offensive names: the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are celebrating their 30th anniversary in San Francisco this weekend with parties, library exhibits, an art show, and their usual over-the-top Easter celebration. The motto of this collection of drag queen nuns is “go forth and sin some more” and they aim to spread joy, banish guilt, and serve the community. Behind the flamboyant outfits and gender chaos is an ethos of community service: they created the very first safe sex guide for gay men in 1982 and have raised over a million dollars for community services through events and bingo games. Never ones to hide from controversy, their combination of religious garb and names and over-the-top celebration of queer sexuality has led to denouncements from the Catholic Church including being put on the Papal List of Heretics by the Pope himself in 1987 and has earned the enmity of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality among others. Sisters are a regular presence at community events and AIDS fundraisers in San Francisco, but they are out in force this weekend. There was a large and exuberant group “in face” on BART last night, and after some debate, we decided that the correct collective noun is perhaps a “sacrilege of Sisters.” If you are in San Francisco, you don’t want to miss the events in Dolores Park on Sunday, including the Easter Bonnet contest at 1 pm and the infamous Hunky Jesus competition at 3:40pm. Are you an older sibling? Did you feel unfairly treated compared to your brothers and sisters? Well, now you have science to back you up. According to Games Parents and Adolescents Play, a new sociology study published in The Economic Journal, the oldest kid in the family really does bear the brunt of parental strictness, while the younger brothers and sisters generally coast on through. "This reputation model of parent–child interactions yields two empirical predictions. First, parents with two or more children should be more willing to punish their older children who engage in risky behaviour in order to influence the actions of their later-born children. Second, to the extent that parents can establish such reputations, their older children are less likely to engage in risky behaviour as teens. In essence, the reputation model implies that risk-taking of adolescent offspring and parental responses to such behaviour vary systematically by birth order."

In celebration of my antipodean homesickness I've spent the morning catching up with some great Australian and New Zealand musical comedy acts I've been to. You've already met Flight of the Conchords previously on mefi. Now come and meet some... Flight of the conchords have appeared previously on mefi (as well they should) but you might be excited to know they aren't the only antipodean musical comedy act! Come and meet some of the others. We'll start with the original bad boys of musical comedy: the Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS); as likely to leap into the crowd to pash someone as spit on them, DAAS live shows were an anarchic mix of foul songs(NSFW), spoken word, actual great singing and, if you were lucky enough to catch one of their later gigs, this song. More recently we have Tripod who continue the three piece theme but are a bit more user friendly and who are gonna make you happy. Women represent in the form of the Kranzky sisters who...well, defy description really. Across the water we also get the foul mouthed Ms Peacock They're not exactly musical, but unusual sound does play a big part with The Umbilical Brothers

We listened to the birds and tried to sing along.

The New "Science" of Siblings An amusing article from Time magazine by Jeffrey Kluger which reports that your siblings have more influece on your personality than any other group-- parents, peers, spouses, children, etc. My ex-wife thinks I'm sarcastic, combative, insensitive, etc. Do I get to blame my brothers and sisters for this now? Another article on this issue "The Science of Siblings". Apparently, they could have made me more likely to be gay too.
