Guitarist Jeff Hanneman of Slayer has died at 49.

A founding member of the long-running thrash institution, Jeff Hanneman passed away of liver failure after a long battle with necrotizing fasciitis thought to have been caused by a spider bite (previously.) Hanneman wrote music and lyrics for many of the band's most iconic songs, including Angel of Death, Raining Blood, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss.

"We didn't know if he was going to pull through at all"

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman will not tour with the band this summer as he continues treatment for necrotizing fasciitis contracted from a spider bite in 2011. Hanneman was bitten on his right arm, and picks with his right hand. The band's official statement describes Hanneman's long recovery, which includes a medically induced coma and an extensive series of skin grafts.

Viktoriya Yermolyeva, heavy metal pianist

Viktoriya Yermolyeva plays Metallica's "Master of Puppets", Motorhead's "Ace of Spades", and Slayer's "Seasons in the Abyss" the way they were meant to be heard - on the piano.

"You're like my personal brand of herion." My god, are you -twelve-?"

In Buffy Vs. Edward (Twilight Remixed), Edward Cullen from the Twilight Series meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Sunnydale High. It's an example of transformative storytelling serving as a visual critique of Edward's character and generally creepy behavior. Seen through Buffy's eyes some of the more patriarchal gender roles and sexist Hollywood tropes embedded in the Twilight saga are exposed in hilarious ways. (Previous Twilight discussion on MeFi )

Mark your calendar: SLAYER!!!

June 6, 2006 (6/6/06) is the National Day of Slayer and the rules are simple: Listen to Slayer at full blast in your car. Listen to Slayer at full blast in your home. Listen to Slayer at full blast at your place of employment. Listen to Slayer at full blast in any public place you prefer. DO NOT use headphones! The objective of this day is for everyone within earshot to understand that it is the National Day of Slayer. National holidays in America aren't just about celebrating; they're about forcing it upon non-participants.

Goodbye, chosen one

Adios to the slayer. Buffy the Vampire Slayer ends tonight. This well written farewell says goodbye to a much loved, and sometimes taken way too seriously pop-cult icon. Though talk of spinoffs abound. Nothing will ever be the same as first time you realized: "hey, this show doesn't suck at all!"

Thanks, guys.
