Before World War II, Guam had 12 species of native forest birds. Today, 10 of those species are extinct, and the other 2 have less than 200 individuals. Stowing away in ship cargo, the Brown Tree Snake has overrun the island. With no natural predators and a virtually endless food supply, it causes power outages, and may mean the end of Guam's Forests.

Earlier this year, the US Fish and Wildlife service opened an inquiry into the possibility of adding all snakes of the genera Boa, Python and Eunectes to the Injurious Species List. This move would effectively ban the import, export and inter-state trade of all species within these genera. The move follows increased sightings of Burmese Pythons in the Florida Everglades. These snakes are large, powerful constrictors that are capable of killing an adult human. Burmese pythons do have very specific care requirements but they are able to survive year-round in the warm, moist Everglades environment. The National Park Service has been keeping a close eye on their invasion, and the Pythons are already enjoying the occasional endangered Woodrat. The pet reptile industry is already up in arms about the ban, pointing out that several smaller, less dangerous species such as the extremely popular Ball Python would also be restricted under such a wide ban. Of course, some snake owners are not exactly helping their cause. Other reptile breeders also argue that the Everglades are a unique environment, and that the snakes could not invade any other areas of the continental US. However, the United States Geological Survey disagrees, and suspects that global climate change will only make matters worse.

But it's remarkable for what it is: an insider account of the history and practice of a serpent-handling sect by a current practitioner. For anyone interested in the more unusual expressions of Christianity in rural Appalachia, this site is a treasure. It includes video of Pastor Jimmy's preaching/serpent-handling, as well as his own recounting of the oral history of his tradition--a history that he traces back to early 19th century England. Most other accounts of snake handling go back no farther than the life of George Hensley, who began to popularize the practice around 1910. Jimmy's account of his sect has also been compiled into a book. Pastor Morrow may be the only person left who remembers these stories and is making an effort to see that they are preserved.

Australia is well known for having more than it's share of dangerous wildlife. However only a few examples are well known outside of the continent. The funnelweb spider might be Australia's most infamous horror. But the redback (a relative of the American black widow) and mouse spider both deserve your respect as well. Long hyped as causing severe ulceration, the reputation of the white-tailed spider might not be as deserved but is still a spider of concern. (more inside...)

Bored at work? Or maybe just tired of playing the game on your snazzy Nokia Cell.. needless to say I find time to play this every day. All praise "The Snake Game". The only downside which makes Nokia's cellphone far superior, is unless you have a laptop and perhaps a wireless NIC at work, it is probably impossible to play the game while you sit in the bathroom.
