On 15 April, 1989, 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at the Hillsborough Stadium, in what was the worst stadium disaster in British football history. At the time and for years afterward, the blame for the disasters was laid squarely on the supporters themselves, who supposedly were drunk hooligans, smeared and slandered both by the South Yorkshire police and the media, especially The Sun.
