For decades Brown Windsor Soup stood as a culinary allegory for the British empire, and was reputedly a favorite food of Queen Victoria herself. By the 1950s, Brown Windsor Soup appeared to have had its day in the sun, ultimately becoming a favorite source of hilarity on comedy shows ranging from the Goon Show to Fawlty Towers. But it remained a soup fondly remembered by older Britons as terrible swill served on British Rail dining cars and in boarding houses. In recent years, celebrity chefs and food sites have tried to redeem the dish. And yet now, a terrible question presents itself. Did Brown Windsor Soup even exist prior to 1950s comedy?

The broth is just chicken and onions, with a confetti of vegetables added at the end where their flavor remains bright. The noodles are wide and winding... But, for me, the real triumph was giving the chicken parts and onion a saute... before adding water to make the soup. This deepened flavor base makes for magical soup, with a bronzed color, more robust flavor and significantly reduced prep time. ... With all of the blustery, cold days to go this winter, everyone... deserves to have a homemade, from-scratch chicken noodle soup that can be pulled off in just about an hour in their back pocket. Thanks to Science! we now know that chicken soup, if not able to cure colds, can in fact mitigate upper respiratory tract infections by inhibiting neutrophil migration.

Should-we-eat-it-filter: A 2,400-year-old vat of soup has been discovered in China. Archaeologists discovered the vessel, containing liquid and bones, in a tomb near the ancient capital of Xian. The bronze container is believed to have turned the soup green...although it seems like being unrefrigerated for 2,400 years could have contributed to that.
