I'm so sorry, Metafilter, really I am. I don't know what's come over me, but I am posting one of the dopiest, most embarrassing celebrity novelty tunes ever recorded. It's by the fellow who played Batman in the 60s TV series, Adam West, in a breathtakingly stupid recording of an utterly ridiculous song called Miranda. I pray that you'll forgive me for my indiscretion, and I promise I will post some inspiring and worthwhile music next time around.

It's either really smart, or really stupid. Perhaps some genius in an advertising agency thought took the phrase "there are no stupid questions" to heart and decided to launch it as the new mantra for Diesel Jeans - Be Stupid. Revolving around the questionable notion that "smart is square", the campaign trumpets in enormous bold block typeface such nuggets as: * SMART HAD ONE GOOD IDEA AND THAT IDEA WAS STUPID. * STUPID IS TRIAL AND ERROR. MOSTLY ERROR. * IF WE DIDN'T HAVE STUPID THOUGHTS WE'D HAVE NO INTERESTING THOUGHTS AT ALL. * SMART LISTENS TO THE HEAD, STUPID LISTENS TO THE HEART. * SMART MAY HAVE THE BRAINS, BUT STUPID HAS THE BALLS. * STUPID MIGHT FAIL. SMART DOESN'T EVEN TRY. * SMART CRITIQUES. STUPID CREATES. * SMART HAS THE PLANS, STUPID HAS THE STORIES. * SMART SAYS NO. STUPID SAYS YES. * ONLY THE STUPID CAN BE TRULY BRILLIANT. Coupled with images of hot people doing moronic things, and placed in the context-less vacuum of tube stations, billboards, etc. the material has been banned in the UK as "indecent and promoting anti-social behaviour". Of course, somebody somewhere would think this is truly brilliant and give it an award: "How many global brands would have the guts to do this?".

Also hairspray high-volt abuse, his flyback transformer no workee (wait for it), carbon scoring on your droids? And danyk's small shaded-pole motor ...OF DEATH!!! Stumbled into these with a jealous twinge: I notice that he's tried a couple things I never dared. They're old postings, yet don't show up in search (Czech keywords.) All his vids have non-English project pages with details & photos. But then while searching deeper: YEESH. Poking at bare unshielded magnetrons on the bathroom floor? Watching him feels like a hatful spiders, big black widows. Flammable hairspray plus Tesla coil. METER LONG AC discharges. UNSHIELDED X-RAY SOURCES WHA?!! And his tiny shaded-pole motor is slightly terrifying. Sir I salute you, and now I've had to go buy Ukranian GU-81Ms on eBay and need to get an expensive 1KW plate transformer hope you're HAPPY. Now go and peruse his main site (En) for even more stoof, much impressive and not even that dangerous.

Old cars and caravans were transformed into racing machines as 20 competitors gathered in Bovingdon, England for the annual caravan easter race. 20 cars and caravan combinations battled their way around the 300 metre tarmac circuit. James Lovelock, 90, says we're too stupid to prevent climate change. "I don't think we're yet evolved to the point where we're clever enough to handle a complex a situation as climate change." One of the main obstructions to meaningful action is "modern democracy", he added in an extended interview. "I have a feeling that climate change may be an issue as severe as a war. It may be necessary to put democracy on hold for a while." He thinks only a catastrophic event would now persuade humanity to take the threat of climate change seriously enough, such as the collapse of a giant glacier in Antarctica.

From the 70s version of a bad hair day to disco chart-toppers leaping out of cassette tape boxes to three-legged celebrities who are currently in jail to... well, you just gotta see this one, the Advertising Sillyness from the Seventies flickr group has the groovy images you'll recall (or may want to forget) if you were around in those halcyon days. The group also offers a sampling of the little ads that dotted the comic book back pages of the 1970s, like this old favorite, and this. And lo and behold! Here's an ad for that classic 70s book that I really wanted when I was sixteen, but somehow never got my hands on.: How to Pick Up Girls!. Yep, the future looked bright back then... Fun lovin' prankster and b3ta user godspants edited the wikipedia page on Cypriot soccer team AC Omonia to include the "facts" that the fans are referred to as "the zany ones", wear hats made of shoes and sing a song about a little potato. Yesterday there was a match between Omonia and British club Manchester City. British Tabloid the Daily Mirror used the wikipedia "facts" in their build-up article. Daily Mirror obviously doesn't realise their journalist has been guilty of incredibly lazy research, despite the prankster emailing them, and the Mirror refers to the "Zany ones" in their post-match article the next day.

StupidFilter is a work in progress which aims to recognize online stupidity programmatically. Keep in mind we grade stupidity on a scale of 1 to 5. Someone might get a 1 or 2 for a comment that used no punctuation, whereas a comment consisting of nothing but text message abbreviations with a dash of LOLLLLL thrown in for good measure would probably rate a solid 4 or 5. There is a certain amount of subjectivity, and our software is aware of that; scoring will be normalized to eliminate excessively generous or harsh estimations of stupidity. Read some examples of "the tyranny of idiocy" in their collection of Random Stupidity .
