Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts: From 1958-1973, composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein (Previously on MeFi) played live, educational concerts with the New York Philharmonic that were televised nationwide on CBS. Tapes of the broadcasts were eventually syndicated to 40 countries, introducing an entire generation of children to a wide range musical concepts, styles and composers. The first concert to air was "What Does Music Mean." Bernstein led a total of fifty-three Young People's Concerts during those fourteen years, and covered a broad range of subjects. The works of the great composers were explored, including tributes to modern masters such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Paul Hindemith, Gustav Holst, Aaron Copland and Charles Ives. Bernstein discussed "Jazz in the Concert Hall," "Folk Music in the Concert Hall," and "The Latin-American Spirit." He explained the intricacies of Music Theory in programs such as "Musical Atoms: A Study of Intervals" and "What is a Mode?" He broached complex aesthetic issues such as "What Does Music Mean?" (his first program) with clarity and without condescension. Bernstein also used the Young People's Concerts to introduce young performers to the musical world. The sixteen year-old pianist André Watts made his debut in the concert of January 15, 1963.

Once the home of the Weckquaesgeek tribe, and more recently, William Shatner, Hastings-on-Hudson might sound like the next village over from Downton Abbey, but according to the New York Times, it's "a village, in a Wittgensteinian sort of way" seeing an influx of ex-Brooklynites fleeing to the suburbs in the face of creeping real estate prices. Sure, these new hipsturbanites may miss the creative density of urban New York, but at least the river setting matches their Filson/woolrich heritage-brand aesthetic. Read on if you set your cultural compass to the Brooklyn Flea, or your NYT Style section appreciation to ironic twee.

The video for "Gangnam Style" is the first to reach one billion views (short scale) on YouTube. Though the raw 'view count' doesn't indicate how many individual people have seen it, or how many people have watched it multiple times, the all-but-one-line-in-Korean video has spawned a large collection of parodies, meme variations and Christmas light inspirations. The video went live on YouTube on July 15th. It was first mentioned/linked on MetaFilter on the same day, by Needled. Appearances on many TV shows increased the exposure of the song and video. On November 24th, Gangnam Style galloped past Justin Bieber's "Baby" to become the most viewed video on YouTube. In 160 days, the video averaged 6.25 million views per day (though Vevo contended less), widening awareness of K-Pop. The one billion view mark was reached on December 21st 2012, further muddying the Nostradamus apocalypse 'prediction'. "Gangnam Style" has been chosen along with "fiscal cliff" and "Romneyshambles" as some of Collins Dictionary's words of the year. The song and video have helped Psy make a few bucks and afford a pad in Los Angeles. The song headlines YouTube's review of their year. Previously on MetaFilter.

If you use Americanisms just to show you know them, people may find you a tad tiresome, so be discriminating.
You may have to think harder if you are not to use jargon, but you can still be precise.
Use all metaphors, dead or alive, sparingly, otherwise you will make trouble for yourself.

“I’m Scott Sternberg. And I make clothes.” Scott Sternberg designs for Band of Outsiders, which shares a name with a 1964 French New Wave film. Based in Los Angeles Sternberg worked previously as a Hollywood agent. Debra Scherer’s The Little Squares created a short film about Sternberg called Being There. Band of Outsiders has a preppy feel running throughout their products: “These American staples, American sportswear classics [reinterpreted] in subtle ways.” In this way, the Spring Summer 2011 collections were "a study in brooding pensiveness...evocative of both The Royal Tenenbaums and Tin Tin.". A New York Fashion Week runway show in February 2012 had hair and makeup going for a cowboy look, in line with Sternberg's recent fascination with "masculine ideals", drawing on Alejandro Jodorowsky's films El Topo (IMDB, wikipedia) and Holy Mountain (IMDB, wikipedia, previously) While most lines of the brand focus on menswear, last year the Girl line was introduced. Tavi, the style rookie called it "ethereal and pretty and misty." (Tavi previously) Renowned fashion critic Aziz Ansari once weighed in on where he expected the line to go in the future, after Band of Outsider's first runway show for which Momofuku Milk Bar pastry chef Christina Tosi made Lemon Tree Hugger cookies, the likes of which the hosts claim will never be seen again. Though Sternberg has criticized other clothing brands for industrialization, production of the line “This is not a polo” has moved to China. Suits are handmade in Brooklyn at Martin Greenfield Clothiers (previously), the shop that's clothed Boardwalk Empire. Sternberg's rules of style include "Airplane-fart karma is a bitch", not talking about what brands you're wearing, and not choking yourself with a tie when in a suit. He wears short-sleeved shirts under his suits! Sternberg's home is "a playful amalgam of vintage references and bright color combinations".

Now, almost three years later, there is a Nerd Girlfriend. Roxana has guest curated on Etsy, and been featured on a couple episodes of Put This On by Mefi's own Jesse Thorn: Work, Personal Style. Also, an interview with Roxana that explains why she uses the word "nerd" even if many of her subjects aren't stereotypically nerdy.

Everything feels old. There have been no radical changes in style, culture, art, and fashion over the last 20 years—a stark contrast to every other two decade period going all the way back into the 19th-century, Kurt Anderson argues in Vanity Fair. Every 20 year period marked a drastic and unmistakable shift in cultural appearance with the exception of our current quarter century. The article, in full, is nuanced and concedes some things have changed a lot, technology mainly, but other things which used to change a lot - fashion, pop culture, etc have remained fairly much the same over the past 20 or 25 years, a distinctly unusual condition since the 19th century. Compare our last 20 years with: 1957 to 1977. 1932 to 1952. 1902 to 1922. Anderson is not the first the notice it. Simon Reynolds recent book Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past (blog) has been getting a lot of attention, looking at the question through the world of music. Culture has always remixed, but currently genuine innovation, genuine future-now, is just the pasts future remixed into a sort of perpetual groundhog day. There are underlying structural reasons for this, as argued in the above essays.

It's not breakdancing. Not really, although it's associated with breakdancing nowadays; breakin' was originally seen as being very east coast, while these dances originated on the west coast. What was this dancing?Well, many of the most famous 70s-80s street moves are actually called funk styles, which were performed, at first, to funk and disco, and later to early electronic and industrial dance music. And the big daddy of them all was a dance called the Electric Boogaloo, and demonstrated by the Electric Boogaloos.Here they are in their zoot-suited glory, showing off their signature moves. Here are some of the classic moves of the Electric Boogaloo, explained and demonstrated, with instructional videos. Crazy legs: A move based on twisting the legs in surprising ways, created by a dancer named Poppin (or Popin) Pete but based on a dancer called Crazy Legs. Tutorial. Advanced tutorial (not in English, but useful anyway). Frenso: The basic move of the Electric Boogaloo, containing the essential techniques of popping, consisting of an alternating popping of the arms and leg on each side of the body.
