Tavi Williams, Style Rookie. Tavi is a (self-described) "Tiny 13 year old dork that sits inside all day wearing awkward jackets and pretty hats. Scatters black petals on Rei Kawakubo's doorsteps and serenades her in rap. I have no where near 4 million readers. Rather cynical and cute as a drained rat. In a sewer. Farting. And spitting out guts." She's been blogging about fashion while living with her parents in a Chicago suburb since she was 11. A lot of the blog is photos of herself, taken by herself. In March, talking about New York with Interview Magazine, she said: "I really, really want to go back and I'm talking to my parents about letting me go for Fashion Week in September. It's only like the second week of school when all we do is like sharpen pencils and talk about not bullying." According to the Daily Mail, she got her wish: "For one week I was in Utopia full of people who can recognise that my jacket is Luella. A lot of my classmates don't get it. But some do." Put This On is a new video series and blog by MeFi's Jesse Thorn (youngamerican) and Adam Lisagor (Twitter's lonelysandwich) on men's style, with the style-unconscious but pragmatic beginner in mind. [via mefi projects] In an interview for the Amateur Science podcast, Jesse describes his style methodology as not just about neckties: "fashion has to do with how well you fit into your social circle ... style for men is a lot richer and more sophisticated and it's something that's a skill that you can develop over the course of your life." The blog has so far highlighed all sorts of sweaters, cool E-Bay finds and sharp dressers. Episode 1 is on denim. Jesse visits Rising Sun and Co in Pasadena to pay respect to a $500 hand-crafted pair of jeans, Adam wears a jumpsuit from which to dispense tips on matching your shoes to your belt and everybody wears nice duds.

Lord of the Memes : Now that MeFi has taught me how to beat the hipsters, how do I beat the poseurs? David Brooks says "prestige has shifted from the producer of art to the aggregator and the appraiser;" the cultural elite are early adopters and, more importantly, early discarders, of culture. The article is worthwhile if only because Brooks provides an interesting narration on what being cool by being anti-cool has meant in the last 75 years or so. Has the exponential growth of culture blurred the lines between high and low culture? If we no longer define cultural literacy by a set of notable reference points, can we even speak of a one culture?

Love American Style Season One Volume One is coming to DVD on November 20th. The series ran on ABC-TV from 1969-1974, was nominated for an emmy for best comedy series (won for music) and often featured pilots that had been turned down by the networks. Some would later be picked up after airing on Love American Style; two such shows were Happy Days and Wait til Your Father Gets Home. The original theme song was performed by the Cowsills, here is their live version years later. As a kid, I actually hoped my dating life might be fun and humorous like the show, no such luck.
