enchantMOON is a "Hypertext Authoring Tablet" featuring hardware design by Yoshitoshi ABe. For CES the company behind the tablet, Ubiquitous Entertainment, created a series of shorts directed by Evangelion veteran Shinji Higuchi. Some more details about the tablet can be found here and on the official Facebook page. Current details about the UI suggest it takes inspiration from Hypercard and Alan Kay's Dynabook. Physically the device is unusual for a tablet in that it has a handle that can be used as a stand as well as an included smart pen. A lengthy article (Japanese-only) has more pictures as well as a video of the user interface in action; handwriting recognition is used to find a picture of the moon and bring it on to the main screen. The "enchant" part of the name comes from Ubiquitous Entertainment's EnchantJS library for making HTML5 games.

Amazon unveils a new full color 7" multi-touch tablet it is calling Kindle Fire. Also announced are a new Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G. According to Engadget the new Kindle Fire tablet features "a 7-inch IPS (!) panel, Gorilla Glass coating, a 1GHz TI OMAP dual-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a chassis that weighs 14.6 ounces" With it, Amazon has inroduced a new browser it is calling Silk. According to Ars Technica, Silk features a " "split" architecture, allowing it to offload much of the heavy lifting to Amazon's cloud computing cluster for superior browsing performance." Detractors are raising Issues with this split archticture however. Warning that "It sounds as if Amazon will install a trusted certificate in the Silk browser allowing them to provide a man-in-the-middle (MITM) SSL proxy to accelerate your SSL browsing as well." but noted that "Fortunately Amazon will support an "off-cloud" mode for Silk. This lets users opt-out of the benefits of using EC2 while retaining the traditional privacy benefits of connecting directly to remote web sites."

The Economic Times reports: The device has been indigenously developed through a unique collaborative effort, which included the ministry, institutes like the IITs, IISc and VIT, Vellore and students. The idea for a low-cost computer has been in the works for nearly a decade now, with efforts being made by Murli Manohar Joshi in his tenure during the NDA regime, and then by Arjun Singh during UPA-I. Given the lukewarm response from IT sector companies, the ministry began discussions with professors and experts at IISc Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay. Undergraduate and postgraduate students participated by working on the development of a mother board for a low-cost device with ample flexibility to change components. Initially, the device came at a cost of $47, however further collaborations across institutes led to refinements which helped reduce price. “When we started the project, the response from the private sector was lukewarm. Now, many are willing to join the innovation,” Mr Sibal said.
