Mary K. Greer Reads The Story In A Picture

Introducing the blog of Tarot author Mary K. Greer. This week she posted a gentle takedown of Whoopi's psychic reading on The View. She recently initiated a discussion about the potentially exploitative practices of modern gypsy fortunetellers, based on a report by Al Jazeera. She's also begun posting examples of cartomancy in art and literature, including a wonderful interpretation of this unforgettable Gustave Doré painting (see the comments).

How delicious is the Beyond The Valley of the Dolls Tarot Deck? Even the man who wrote the movie gave the deck two thumbs up. The deck is by Howard Hallis, who is currently working on a picture of everything (previously on MeFi). He claims to have also sent the cards to filmmaker Russ Meyer: "He called me from his house in Palm Springs and loved them so much he wanted me to come by and have lunch with him. He told me to bring my girlfriend too... especially if she had big tits. Unfortunately, I still haven't made it up his way."

Beware the Three of Stakes!

Artist Robert M. Place reveals images from two works-in-progress: The Vampire Tarot, based on the Bram Stoker's Dracula, and one called The Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery. Place already has several gorgeous decks to his name: The Alchemical Tarot. Tarot of the Saints. The Buddha Tarot. More from Place on the connection between Bram Stoker, Tarot artist Pamela Coleman Smith, and the Golden Dawn:
"My deck is based on the literary vampire, particular Stoker’s Dracula. Stoker’s biographer, Barbara Belford, definitely believes that Stoker was familiar with the Tarot and based many of the characters in Dracula on Tarot trumps. Besides this I feel that one of the main inspirations for his story came from the Grail Legend and as I have pointed out in my books the Grail influenced the Tarot as well. The Tarot trumps contain an allegory about the search for immortality and the purification of the soul and these are the same themes we find in Dracula...

"Pamela Coleman Smith was one of Stoker’s closest friends from the time she was 10 years old, and went to live with the actress Ellen Terry, until Stokers death in 1912 . When she was 10 her mother died and she went to live with Ellen Terry, who was one of the most famous actresses in England. Ellen worked at the Lyceum Theater in London and Stoker was the manager. Pamela began working on sets and acting in bit parts. So, she came to be a good friend of Stoker’s. She actually illustrated his last novel, The Lair of the White Worm. But, it wasn't Pamela who introduced Stoker to the Golden Dawn. He had other friends who were founding members such as Florence Farr and John W. Brodie-Innes."

The Eighties Tarot

You've seen Pomo tarot, you've let the wisdom of spock guide you using the Star Trek Tarot, and in an act of desperation, you even tried getting down with the Vampire deck. Still haven't found the deck that's right for you?

Maybe it's time you tried the 80s tarot deck. (And before you ruin the surprise, try to guess which Major Arcana they pegged Morrisey for...)

"Dear policeman, I am God" found inscribed on a Tarot card. This latest clue in the Maryland sniper case will no doubt be tested and thoroughly investigated, although it was reported that it could be the work of prankster. If you have read the interesting post below by stevis ("I am who I am") of a Florida man who was legally denied the right to call himself "God", doesn't it make you wonder if the human desire to personify or impersonate God is a manifestation of the desperation for control over others, but not for the better? God, after all, wants you to surrender your life to the almighty. Or (mental illnesses aside) is it much more complex than that?

Like tarot or astrology in that it's a tool for introspection, only without the occult trappings. Kinda fun to play with, though. Or maybe not. (Warning: annoying The Weakest Linkesque music.)
