If you have eaten a tomato this winter, chances are very good that it was picked by a person who lives in virtual slavery.

Neil Gaiman gets cease-and-desisted. In a rather bizarre legal turn of events, Neil Gaiman posted in his journal today that he received a cease-and-desist letter from Mark I. Reichenthal of Branfman & Associates insisting that he remove an "unauthorized" link from tomatoesareevil.com to the official movie website for "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". (Interestingly enough, Reichenthal evidently has previously been deployed to defend the "... For Dummies" trademark.) Problem is that Neil doesn't own the site; they merely posted a photograph of him with a particularly evil-looking tomato, a tomato which Gaiman is turning into salsa in the hopes of becoming "the Paul Newman of satanic salsas." Neil's reaction: "What an astonishingly small amount of research they must do before firing off these bizarre letters."

Tomatoes! They are delicious, or at least they used to be. First came ethylene ripening and monoculture which turned them into tasteless red baseballs, and taste was't the only problem. Then came this year's
hurricanes which decimated the crops, driving prices up. And now, just
when you think you've found a really tasty variant on the market with
the wonderfully appropriate name of UglyRipe, the state growers
board goes and bans them for being too ugly. If you agree that
this sucks go and tell the guys in charge.
Man, that little red fruit sure does seem to cause a lot of trouble. Maybe we should try to smash them all.

Cool Food For The Hot Summer Ahead: Bruce Cole's Sauté Wednesday has some enticing summery tips, as well as a superb collection of links to yummy articles on food and drink. Here in Portugal, we know Summer has begun when the first fresh sardines, start arriving, fat and silvery from the deep blue sea and straight onto the open-air barbecue, to be scoffed with buttery, yellow potatoes and great big salads overflowing with grilled green peppers, cucumbers, the first ripe tomatoes, sweet new onions and crunchy lettuce leaves.
