Bras for Trans Women: Controversy and Resources

Award-winning Austin lingerie shop Petticoat Fair specializes in hard-to-fit bra sizes. Recently a trans woman was turned away from the shop and started social media protest and boycott campaign, swamping the store's Yelp page with negative reviews. The owner issued a controversial apology and plans to meet with the Transgender Education Network Of Texas to work out a better policy. The story started to percolate through national news and commentary and sites. Meanwhile, the original complainant has called off the official boycott and the store has promised to issue a new policy in the near future. [more inside]

Greer Lankton, darling of the 1980s East Village art scene, made glamorous and grotesque dolls that reflected her struggles with anorexia and drug addiction as well as her fascination with sexuality and gender in all their mutable permutations. She died of an overdose only a month after completing her final masterpiece, a recreation of her Chicago apartment inside Pittsburgh's Mattress Factory. [more inside]

On January 25th, San Francisco will host its first ever Mr. Transman competition, following the success of the third annual NYC Mr. Transman event.
Contestants include James Darling, founder of this very NSFW site for transmasculine porn; Lynne Breedlove, founder of the punk band Tribe 8; Mason J, gender diversity speaker and activist; and Loren, the photographer behind the book Body Alchemy
Judges include author Michelle Tea, who has been writing a series on getting pregnant as a queer over forty; Brontez Purnell of the punk band The Younger Lovers (video); singer/songwriter Shawna Virago; and genderqueer porn performer and model Jiz Lee (NSFW). [more inside]

I got monsters. How 'bout you?

Mina Caputo began her career as Keith Caputo, founder of the heavy metal band Life of Agony. In the early 1990s the band became huge in Europe, and the teenage Caputo found herself trapped in the life of a macho metal superstar when what she really wanted was to be a nice young lady attending Julliard. She performed as Keith for over 20 years, then in 2010 Niko Bikialo's quietly devastating music video for Caputo's song Got Monsters [brief nudity] put the viewer inside the mind of a transwoman as she struggles to find her place in the world and make a friend of the stranger she sees in the mirror. A year later, Caputo shocked metal fans when she officially announced she was transitioning. [more inside]
