As a historical document the book is exhaustive and valuable. But I did not come away feeling that I knew or understood Hüsker Dü — the musicians themselves, their music, or any of the people around them — any more intimately than I already did. Earles’ writing is at once densely opinionated and emotionless. He expertly follows the chronology of the band’s tours and releases, but he never makes it understandable why some of us look back on this band so reverently, or why it would be worth somebody’s time to discover Hüsker Dü today. Paul Motian (wiki) (myspace) (allaboutjazz), one of the great jazz drummers of our time, is dead at 80. Paul Motian rose to prominence playing with the Bill Evans Trio in the late '50s and early '60s. He played with Paul Bley and then spent many years with Keith Jarret. He went on to form his trio with Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell. Over the years he played with many others including Chris Potter and Jason Moran, Lee Konitz, Tony Malaby and Ben Monder, Geri Allen, Chick Corea and many more. He thought Jimmy Crawford was a motherfucker (in the good way). Chicago Reader, NPR, LA Times announcements. Rest in rhythm, Paul Motian.

An Australian Madoff? Trio Capital, an Australian fund manager, has been ordered to wind up its funds after being unable to account for $123 million in its Astarra fund since investigations began in October. The fund "has a total of $426 million under management - including superannuation savings of about 10,000 Australians." Some worry what this means for more potential frauds in Australia's "privatized social security." The Syndey Morning Herald has more: the initial scrutiny, the whistleblower, the fears, hope fades. John Hempton, blogger and hedge fund manager based in Australia, notified the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) in September. He outlined his story of delving into the problems in a January post, explaining to non-Australians how the Superannuation system (privatized Social Security) makes this fraud a significantly bigger story. Dominck McCormick, the fund manager who initially tipped Hempton, has written a fantastic summary of what red flags existed, the role of due diligence, and how the financial planning industry can move forward. Hempton has an eye for frauds. He previously tussled with hedge fund Ponta Negra, whose manager recently plead guilty to defrauding investors. Ponta Negra shared an office and marketer with Paradigm Global, a fund of hedge funds owned by the son and brother of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. Hempton had found connections between Paradigm and other questionable funds. This included several connections to eccentric Allen Stanford's Stanford Financial Group, which remains frozen and under investigation for fraud. Hempton first investigated Astarra because of its connections to Paradigm. A day in the life of Abdullah Ibrahim, South-African composer and performer who creates hypnotic and softly singing grooves. To me, his recent piano trios are the highlights of his work, because they are both swinging and soulful. But his compositions do not sound bad in a big band setting -(or in an arrangement for guitar). His music is quiet and meditative but powerful, and has sometimes been used as a banner for freedom and equality. Now he likes to withdraw once in a while to the smallest scenes (french commentary with some english underneath), putting strong emphasis on necessary simplicity. Written portrait.

Trio close to being cancelled. They are one of the few good cable nets. They showed Pink Lady and Jeff fer goodness sakes. Link to how to complain here. As the poster sez: "Isn't the point of paying for hundreds of different channels to not have them be all the same?" Caveat: I killed my tv in March and have never been happier.
