The first official pics of Stern's new Tron pinball machine have been released. According to Stern, this game will continue their recent trend of keeping games "short" and "random". Features include a miniature (non-working, of course) arcade cabinet over a cellar hole, a dropping three-target assembly (as seen on
Attack From Mars and
Spiderman) with a whirlwind disc behind it, and a third flipper. Like Avatar, it looks like Tron will have a "normal" and "LE" release, with the LE version adding lots of
EL wire all over the playfield.

Greetings, Programs! This is enough to make the hearts of every sci-fi geek everywhere go pitter and patter (yes and no, like a bit!). Space Paranoids was "invented" by a young programmer named Kevin Flynn back in 1982. Now it's finally come to life!

By now you're surely aware of
Tron Legacy, the sequel to 1982's Tron. Tron Legacy will have a soundtrack by Daft Punk as counterpoint the score in the original composed by Wendy Carlos.
But what of the Trons that Never Were?
Listen to the soundtrack to Tron 1.5: Rise of the Virals and find out a little about the process behind the sequel that didn't make it.

Although the movie Tron was groundbreaking due to its unprecedented and extensive use of CGI in 1982, after pre-production, it only took four months to shoot and nine months to complete all of the special effects. From
Computer Animation Primer published in 1984, we learn a bit about the technical process, which seems amusingly tedious by today's animation standards.

So, you watched the movie Tron, and now you want to run your computerized guy off of the game grid and into the rest of the computer system? That's exactly what
Daniel Wellman did on his Apple IIgs.

Wikipedia wrangling once more: the entire German edition
was shut down this week over the contents of a
single entry. The parents of the article's subject, a German hacker who died in 1998 under
mysterious circumstances, are displeased with his real name being disclosed in the encyclopedia. It is now back online; however, the future of the family's efforts is currently unclear, not only due to the German order's debatable validity in the US - but also because the order was, initially at least,
mistakenly addressed to St. Petersburg, Russia, instead of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Classic Games Convention. For those of
you into vintage games, tomorrow is the last day to check out
PhillyClassic 4, a vintage game fest at which developers will release
new vintage games. Some
industry personalities will be present, including Sid Meier of
Civilization fame, and
Cindy Morgan from everyone's classic game movie,
Tron, soon to have a sequel (the game, not the movie). Play a
vintage game on a current system, or relive the good old days of
Vectrex. Leave your quarters at home (the games are on free-play), but bring your
joysticks to donate to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Tron returns with a vengeance. With a theatrical sequel, a 20th anniversary DVD and a first-person PC shooter, you have to wonder why Disney is rollling out the red carpet all of a sudden.
