Wozniak prints his own $2 legal tender, somehow.

Steve Wozniak produces and uses his own two dollar bills. You've seen novelty $2 bill note paper. It's often gummed for easy removal and usage. Same with these bills, but these are legal tender. Woz goes on to detail other situations where printing interesting things has led to fun and profit.

So can we finally drop all those cheap jokes about Italian soldiers?

He was considered a shoo in for an equestrian medal in in the ’36 Olympics but went to war instead. He led the last cavalry charge against artillery and tanks of the British army. Known as Commandante Diavolo, he waged guerrilla warfare in Eritrea alongside his beautiful and heavily armed lover Khadija, daughter of an Ethiopian Muslim chieftain. He served as a diplomat for thirty years and more than once saved lives during military coups. He retired to Ireland (for the horses, of course) where he rode and hunted fox well into his nineties. Please pause for a moment for the passing of Amedeo Guillat, the most decorated soldier of the Italian army. [more inside]

"So, Madmen is a show about people in their early sixties?"

Newest episode of "Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis" this time with guest star Jon Hamm of AMC's Madmen. For those unfamiliar, Zach Galifianakis is a comedian who's shown up in a few movies, but is most endeared for his casually abrasive stand-up; a beloved figure to and product of the Los Angeles Indie comedy scene. [Episode has a little NSFWish language, but mostly fine] Here is episode 1 of between two ferns (with Michael Cera) and episode 2 (with Jimmy Kimmel... who's a little too in on the joke)

And it's a goodnight from me too

Any Top 100 list of UK comedy shows has the famous Two Ronnies "Four Candles" sketch in the top ten. Silly word play, songs and Ronnie Barker's fabulous timing, made them TV blockbusters for 16 years. Presenting a brief youtube linkdump... [more inside]

Cold, Wet, and Doubly Up in Your Crotch.

"While we were there, sitting by the fire one night, I saw an extraordinary-looking dog that appeared to have two noses. I was sober at the time, and then I remembered the story that the legendary explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett came back with in 1913 of seeing such strange dogs in the Amazon jungle", explains fellow British Colonel John Blashford-Snell. The double-schnoz phenomenon has been documented in other species, and has even been studied, dramatized, and synthesized in humans. But a clue has recently been discovered in Bolivia that hints at not just a random mutation, but what might have once been a multi-snouted dog breed.

Mystery at Shingle Street

Shingle Street is a tiny, picturesque hamlet on the coast of Suffolk harbouring a big WW2 mystery: the best developed rumour is of an attempt by the Germans to invade Britain at this spot which was anticipated and intercepted by pumping fuel onto the sea surface and setting fire to it. UK files on the subject are closed, again mysteriously, until 2021. Ronald Ashford, who claims to have been an eye witness, has a lot more information. You can stay.

Bordering on the ridiculous

Free The Tucson Two. Or don't. If you find someone lost and dying in the desert, should you help them? What if they turn out to be attempting to enter the country illegally? Then is it OK to leave them to die? These folks say no, not really. And these folks say yes, probably. Previously discussed immigration fun on MetaFilter: 1 2 3

Erik Petersen

Erik Petersen. Danish newspaper photographer. Died in 1997. He took a number of pictures around WWII. He never developed them. Fortunately, sixty years later, someone else has. Now they can be found in a book. Here's a bit of bloggery as well.
