Out of the closet, into the frying pan

One of the more interesting Senate races in 2004 is shaping up in Florida, where everyone but the electorate appears to know that Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Foley is gay. This open secret -- which would help explain how a "dream come true" right-wing politician has a strong gay-rights voting record -- calls into question whether respecting a person's right to "stay in the closet" perpetuates the idea that homosexuality is abnormal. "I am not a Bush Republican," Alan Keyes wrote Saturday for WorldNetDaily. "The Bush administration is skillfully lobotomizing the moral conservative cause in America because it is unwilling or afraid to take the positions that are best for America."

Affirmative action seems to be taking root in an unlikely place: the Bush White House. "There's been talk inside and outside the administration about having no more than half the 484 political positions in the cabinet and agencies go to white males and at least 30 percent to women," Fred Barnes writes in the conservative Weekly Standard.

"Who on Earth actually listens to what [Michael] Moore says?,"

"Who on Earth actually listens to what [Michael] Moore says?," Nicholas Confessore asks in the current American Prospect. "You might as well blame the Republican Party for some nut's post on FreeRepublic.com."

George W. Bush is wearing a ZZ Top hat this morning. I wonder if he's a fan of the band's 1976 song Arrested for Driving While Blind ... "When you're driving down the highway at night/And you're feelin' that wild turkey's bite/Don't give Johnny Walker a ride/Cause Jack Black is right by your side/You might get taken to the jailhouse and find/You've been arrested for driving while blind."

Bush narrowly defeats Gore by 26 electors and 0.1 percent of the popular vote.

Bush narrowly defeats Gore by 26 electors and 0.1 percent of the popular vote. That's the average of 14 predictions in the Washington Post. I thought it would be interesting to see how MetaFilter's pundits fare in predicting the Electoral Count and popular vote, so I'm offering a bribe ...
