A vegetarian spider

A (mostly) vegetarian spider: "A small jumping spider has taken to hunting plants instead of bugs. Bagheera kiplingi dodges throngs of aggressive ants to feast on the leaf-tip morsels of acacia shrubs, making it the first mostly vegetarian spider known to science."

The top 10 fake-chicken sandwiches in the U.S. Fake meat is popping up more and more, but it still can be hard to find a good vegan/vegetarian sandwich that doesn't provide its protein from cheese and bread. Amy from PETA's VegCookingBlog has selected her top 10 faux-chicken sandwiches. In reverse order:

10. Chickette Sandwich - Red Dog Saloon, 1421 Colley Ave, Norfolk, VA
9. Breaded Chicken Sandwich - Vertical Diner, 2280 S West Temple, Salt Lake City, UT
8. No Chicken Caesar Club - Foodswings, 295 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY
7. Grilled Gardein Bruschetta Pomodoro Panini - VegiTerranean, 21 Furnace St, Akron, OH
6. Mock Chicken Dijon - Pizza Lucé, various locations, Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
5. Chicken Parmesan Hero - Red Bamboo, 140 W. 4th St., NYC, NY
4. Chicken Run Ranch Burger - Native Foods, southern CA
3. Bayou Chickin' Sandwich - Veggie Grill, L.A. and Irvine, CA
2. Vegan Philly Chicken Cheese Steak - Govinda's Gourmet Vegetarian, 1408 South St, Philadelphia, PA
1. Secret BBQ Chicken Sandwich - Green New American Vegetarian, 2240 N. Scottsdale Rd. #8, Tempe, AZ

Red Bamboo might be my favorite vegan restaurant, but for fake meat in San Francisco, I like Golden Era, Loving Hut, and Millennium. In Louisville (KY), I like Zen Garden. The latter offers a bitching BBQ Soy Sandwich, but none of them have fake-chicken sandwiches.

Got a local favorite that should make the list? What's the best fake-chicken sandwich in the world? Does anyone really care?

Bonus content: Recent update on in vitro meat from Wired UK. And CNN. And Wikipedia.
Operation Pancake

An expose of non-vegan ingredients in pancakes at LA Vegan Thai inspired the QuarryGirl.Com writers to conduct their own extremely thorough investigation of LA vegan restaurants, testing their meals for traces of casein, egg, and shellfish. Over $1000 and a chain of interviews up to Taiwan later, they find that half the restaurants aren't as vegan as they claim, with half registering Positive or High and one registering Overload. Some restaurants vowed to conduct their own tests or requested further assistance; one banned them from the establishment.

How to Make All the Meat You Eat Out of Wheat

So when I was in London some buddies and I went into one of the many all you can eat Chinese restaurants. It was a nice spread too: fish, chicken, steaks all slathered in sauces. "That was great," one of my friends said. "Yeah," I responded. "And all vegetarian, too!" They were dumbfounded. I was apparently the only one who'd noticed the "Vegetarian" sign in the window, and they were all victims of the hoax meat known as Seitan. The term "Seitan" was supposedly coined in the 1960s by George Ohsawa, the founder of the Macrobiotics movement. However, the use of wheat gluten (seitan's sole ingredient) as a meat substitute has a much longer history. Its use supposedly began in Buddhist monasteries as a substitute for duck. Today it is popular in both Chinese and Japanese cuisine. Having made it from scratch (that is, from whole wheat flour) myself I can tell you that it is not difficult, just time consuming. It's faster to make it with instant gluten.

This is probably obvious, but seitan is made of 100% wheat gluten, so you should not eat it if you are Sarah Vowell or anyone else who suffers from Celiac disease or wheat allergies. (You could try gluten-free gluten instead).

The name of this post came from one of the earlier books on "Wheat Meat" that also taught me how to make seitan the first (and only) time I made it.

Veganizing Anthony Bourdain

Hezbollah-Tofu Renegades systematically vegetarianize recipes from antiveganist chef Anthony Bourdain, who wrote (in Kitchen Confidential): “Vegetarians, and their Hezobollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.” Bourdain continues (autobloggatio): “To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living. Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food.”

With his recipes veganized, does this make Bourdain all hat and no cattle, so to speak?

Veggies

Eat your vegetables, they are good for you. the goal ... it seemed so ambitious at the time! ... was to cook a vegetable, with new recipes and new vegetables, every single day for an entire month. (Why? Because our diets need more vegetables. Because vegetables are too often an after-thought. And because it's easy to get stuck in a veggie rut.) But after a month, it felt like I was just getting started ... and the asparagus was calling. And then ... 365 days of new vegetables and new recipes.

Fish in your beer (Isinglass)

Serious vegetarians know to keep on the lookout for isinglass and other animal products in their beer. Isinglass is a fish-derived additive that's primarily used to help speed up the clarification of cask-conditioned ales, although some beer-makers will use it to reclaim batches that didn't filter properly. You can help keep your diet swimbladder-free with this awesome list.

Killing animals nicer

Calls for a ban on Halal and Kosher slaughtered meat in the UK are being called an attack on religion or necessary to improve the welfare of farm animals... Where to start thinking about this? Take 1: Is there a vast right-wing, um, wait, left-wing, um wait, err, something-wing conspiracy against Muslims right now? Take 2: Is this a case of "colliding waves of political correctness"? Take 3: As a vegetarian (works for me, ain't gonna preach) the notion of killing animals nicer is kind of funny. Why couldn't we just survey the animals as they enter the slaughterhouse? "Slash to throat? Bolt to head? Electrocution? Thank you, drive through." Whichever way you look at the story, it just goes to show you, the world's a complicated place and you can't please anyone.

Fruitarianism: A lifestyle with a peel

Metafilter has a rich history of posts about vegetarianism, and veganism, and carnivorism, but have we ever delved into the world of fruitarians? Here's a guidebook on how to become one [Eat fruit! Whod've guessed?], a somewhat-puzzling Turkish fruitarian organization, a debunking of some fruitarian claims, and some words of caution for aspiring fruitarians: "...some commercial fruit, such as citrus, is very acidic and will dissolve the teeth out of aspiring fruitarians."

It's national vegetarian week, apparently. After reading this article on chicken nuggets, I might be converting, not that I have ever eaten a chicken nugget, of course. It's not just junk food that leaves one feeling green about the gills though.
I identified all of the vegetables in this quiz, I don't know that I would want to eat all of them though.

McDonald's Fries NOT Vegetarian After All While I realize that a large percentage of veggies avoid McDonald's on principle, an equally large percentage of them go there for the fries.

A McDonald's spokesman said the restaurant chain had never claimed to offer vegetarian food and that it freely provides ingredient information to anyone who requests it.

I can assure you that no where on that ingredient sheet does it say there's animal products in the fries. They went to a good deal of trouble to switch to vegetable oil so they could say they were healthier.

If they've always contained the beef fat and they are not trying to hide that, then why the hell isn't it on the ingredient list?
