The Breakfast Song. Oh, but breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. For a bit of background, Chris Kimball of Cook's Illustrated can teach you the history of pioneer and Victorian breakfasts, which were centered around foods we still enjoy today. Donuts are a staple, as are breakfast cereals, themselves the subject of a fine and storied history. Bacon is a universe unto itself, as you surely already know. And what about the waffle? Not just a taste senstation but namesake to one of America's great culinary joys. And it's versatile, too. Fried joy is yours with the equally versatile beignet, fried apples and, of course, the simple and elegant fried egg. All this wonderful food, surely we must have equally wonderful drink! Coffee is a staple, as is breakfast tea. But you deny yourself some of life's great pleasures if you stop short of alcoholic breakfast drinks: mimosas, Bloody Marys, Irish coffee, or this eponymous joy built upon vodka, peach schnapps and raspberry liqueur.

Waffle House Family and other classics are now available for listening in the comfort of your own home via online jukebox. No longer must you drive the darkness of the American Highway seeking that 24-hour beacon of yellow squares; no longer suck your sweet tea from the straw as you seek out original Waffle House tunes while waiting for your hash browns (scattered, smothered, and covered, of course) to arrive. Mary Welch Rogers, wife of House founder Joe Rogers, is one of several artists who recorded Waffle House-themed songs for the fast-food chain's jukeboxes. Most were penned by Buckner and Garcia of Pac Man Fever. While you're at it, visit the shrine, and enjoy David Wilcox's song about feel the peace that's cooked in grease.

Tri-State Malted Waffles Why? Because I spent a half hour in heavy, waffling traffic, slowly passing and being passed by one of their trucks bearing the plate 'WAFFL1'. Hee. It's fun to say over and over again: malted waffles malted waffles malted waffles. Uh-oh - might be time to take that test again.
