Arab-European League to be prosecuted for anti-semitic cartoon.

The Arab-European League, an organization dedicated to "Rights of the Arab and Moslem communities in Europe and the Arab causes in general," has been charged with breaking a Netherlands law against "inciting hatred". The same prosecutor decided not to put Dutch MP Geert Wilders on trial for his film Fitna (though an appellate court has recently ordered the charges re-instated). Meanwhile, AEL was threatened with prosecution for publishing a cartoon showing (apparently, I haven't found the image) two men standing over a small pile of bones, one saying "I don't think they're Jews," to which the other replies "We have to get to six million somehow." At first, the cartoon came down; but when the charges against Wilders were dropped, AEL reposted it in protest. The AEL now faces a fine of 4,700 euros ($6,700) and even prison time.

"Let them arrest me". Vehemently anti-Islamic Dutch MP Geert Wilders was scheduled to travel to London tomorrow to attend a screening of his controversial short film Fitna (wiki, mefi). Yesterday however, the UK's Home Secretary notified Wilders that his presence in the UK would pose a "serious threat to [...] public security" (PDF), presumably intending to refuse his entry into UK. Wilders plans to board the flight anyway, daring British authorities to arrest him. Not that he's sitting so comfy at home either, however: Wilders faces prosecution in the Netherlands for hate speech and inciting discrimination. The decision to bar the self-styled "freedom fighter" from entering Britain has met with widespread criticism from the Dutch cabinet -- which by the way is completely made up of Wilders' political opponents -- and fellow MPs. The Dutch Foreign Minister has phoned the UK Foreign Secretary and stated he was "deeply upset and disappointed" by the decision. British papers join the chorus of condemnation.

Fitna , a Koranic term translated as 'strife', shows footage of the attacks on the US in September 2001, and images of the bomb attacks on London and Madrid. Geert Wilders, Dutch politician and leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), has called his just-released Fitna a ‘respectable film’. He admitted that Muslims may not be happy with it, but emphasised that he had always stuck to the facts. He said he believes that the film is also ‘one thousand kilometres within the framework of the law’. Muslim organisations in the Netherlands were quoted as expressing relief: “The film is not as shocking as expected” and “represented a caricature of Islam”. National alert levels, which recently went up, have not been raised any further. The movie has more or less dominated dutch news the last few weeks (if not longer), and has recently reached international notoriety, when Network Solutions yanked the site "fitnathemovie.com".
