Wolfman

Shaun Ellis is a wolf behavior expert who raises abandoned wolf cubs and teaches them, by example, the basics of being a wolf. Here he is teaching wolf cubs how to howl. He's also been experimenting with using recordings of howling to protect farms and livestock from wolves. Awwwooooo!

An Inconvenient Wolf

Enemy of the State. Wolves in Alaska are gunned down from the air for cash bounties, their orphaned pups often discovered by agency biologists in the field and killed. Alaskans soon vote on proposition 2 to stop the controversial slaughter that serves the interests of large game hunters.

Kennan Ward Nature-Wildlife Photography

Kennan Ward Nature-Wildlife Photography -- “Being a nature-wildlife photographer is a demanding job … but all the hardship is forgotten when I make eye-to-eye contact with a wild animal, or experience the moment when a window in the clouds opens up, highlighting a landscape … I feel honored to be able to bring the inspiring beauty of nature to others.” I first became aware of Kennan Ward through his third book, Denali: Reflections of a Naturalist. A photographer, videographer and adventurer-naturalist Kennan Ward has written several books about wilderness and wildlife. He has dedicated his life to capturing the rare forms of nature first on film, now digitally with stills and video.

Ten years of work as a Search and Rescue Ranger for the National Park Service honed his wildlife skills, accelerated his evolution as a natural-light photographer and deepened his love for the outdoors. In 2000 Kennan received a prestigious honor from the BBC's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Kennan’s work has been featured in many national and international magazines, including Audubon, Alaska, BBC Wildlife, National Geographic, Backpacker, GreenPeace, NG Kids, Sierra, Natural History, Outdoor Photographer, Outside, and National Wildlife.

In 2001 Kennan published a very special book bringing attention to the stunning natural world of the Alaskan Arctic - The Last Wilderness: Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Kennan has lobbied from Alaska to DC to educate law-makers and congress people about the vast, unspoiled wildernesses of ANWR.

There are literally thousands of photographs on Kennan's web site. A few of my favorites include a humpback whale breach, the love of a mama polar bear, a grizzly bear taking a bath, and a surprise for the Denali tourists.

I hope you enjoy Kennan Ward's photography and videos as much as I do.

Hungry like the wolf. In his state-of-the-nation address, Vladamir Putin took a swipe at the Bush administration, saying that Russia should build "a strong, reliable home because we do see what's going on in the world. . . Comrade Wolf knows whom to eat. It's eating without listening to anyone. And by all appearances, it's not going to listen . . . Where is all this pathos about the need to fight for human rights and democracy when it comes to the need to pursue their own interests? Here everything is possible. There are no limits."

The Long Reach of the Wolf

There are now 16 active packs in the park, and they have triggered a cascade of unanticipated changes in the park's ecosystem.

Zap those wolves into submission - Conspiracy buffs beware. This one's true.

So the U.S. Agriculture Department, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Department are conducting experiments involving livestock, electricity and wolves in Montana - on a ranch owned by Ted Turner.

Apparently those nasty wolves have a habit of biting livestock, so to stop it they are strapping electric collars on the wolves to train them with an electric jolt when they get "within biting distance" of a particular calf. The "trained" and somewhat damaged wolves are set to be released into the wilds in October.

Beautiful counter-quote for this is from a USA Today article about Ted Turner's preserve. Turner is quoted as saying "You can see what we're doing, right? We're just getting out of nature's way. That's all we want to do - get out of the way and let nature go back the way it was." (halfway down page)
