Do You Wanna Date My Avatar? The Guild (previously) releases a music video prior to the start of Season 3. Direct youtube link. Felicia Day and gang are helped out by Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon, collaborators from Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog (previously). To complete the circle, The Guild was one of Joss Whedon's inspirations for Doctor Horrible. Since the last time The Guild was on the blue, they've picked up several Streamys and a sponsorship deal with Microsoft and Sprint.

Assistant professor Noah Snavely at Cornell is into making models. Computer models of real scenes are assembled from photographs, and can then be used to create a better image, a better video, or a 3D representation of an entire city. Snavely was on the team that created the jaw-dropping demo video in 2008. That project, titled “Using Photographs to Enhance Videos of a Static Scene”, was followed by “Enhancing and Experiencing Spacetime Resolution with Videos and Stills” (without Snavely and some of the original team). Now Snavely is working with six people from his alma mater (the University of Washington) to re-create Rome, Italy. Pulling over 150 thousand photos from Flickr (tagged with "rome" or "roma"), the team used a cluster of computers working in parallel to compare photos and model the common buildings. This results in models of several sites, each with incredible precision.

World of Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion involves a quest titled The Art of Persuasion. Richard Bartle, co-author of MUD (and pioneer of MMO gaming), speaks out against this: "Basically, you have to take some kind of cow poke and zap a prisoner until he talks. I'm not at all happy with this. I was expecting for there to be some way to tell the guy who gave you the quest that no, actually I don't want to torture a prisoner, but there didn't seem to be any way to do that..." (via) "...I did zap him, pretty well in disbelief — I thought that surely the quest-giver would step in and stop it at some point? It didn't happen, though. Unless there's some kind of awful consequence further down the line, it would seem that Blizzard's designers are OK with breaking the Geneva convention." "If you do decide to shock people, you need to flag up that you know you're shocking them. This is so they know it's an artistic statement and not that you think the shocking thing isn't shocking. This gives the impression that Blizzard thinks it's OK to torture prisoners, and that torture actually works." What would Jonathan Blow think about this? This has also been taken up at the WoW Forums, with somewhat less literacy.

Gee, boss, I'm feeling a cold coming on. I definitely won't be in to work tomorrow. What's that? You saw me at Gamestop and/or Best Buy at midnight? I, er, well, I was dealing with a nasty bug. No, not that one, the other one (no worries, I'll be compensated!). I'm quite talented, you see. If I was in Europe, they'd already be showing me the way to Northrend. Alas, I'm not, and I have to wait until 9pm PST. In the meantime, there are those who've been where I'm going, and have nicely posted a review already.

WOW is the largest role-playing game in the world. Monster Camp is a new documentary that follows the folks that participate in a real life role playing camp/organization. A WOW camp. For some, this might be heaven. Here are some reviews: Variety, Rotten Tomatoes. For some of us who are unfamiliar with the massive multi-player game. This could be quiet an eye opener, to a part of the community we don't see often. I had to add something terrifying, like Tyra explaining the ugly side of WOW.

The 2005 outbreak of Corrupted Blood in World of Warcraft may provide epidemiologists with a new platform for studying the spread of disease.

By using these games as an untapped experimental framework, we may be able to gain deeper insight into the incredible complexity of infectious disease epidemiology in social groups.

It comes as no surprise that the "stupid factor" plays a role in susceptibility to viral marketing, but it may also be a factor in the spread of real life germs.

Making a watch by hand. In these days of “fast” and “convenient” I decided to commence a work of “painstaking” and “craftsmanship”, making my own wristwatch. I have had the idea for a certain arrangement of the watch dial, as on the image at the right, for a while now. My investigations into available movements showed that no production movement would give me this layout. After a long period of indecision and wondering what I was really getting myself into I decided to make my own movement, followed by the case and dial.

In the World of Warcraft, Serenity Now - a hardcore Player-verus-Player (PvP) guild - attacked an in-game memorial service held by another guild for a guild member who passed away in real life. They made a video of the exploit, apparently for recruitment purposes. In their wake they left many questions...
