About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

I've been hunting for a reasonable, infrequently-occurring screen name for a long time, but given my real name (a little too common) and my childhood nickname ("Hobbes," way too common), nothing's ever jumped out.

The term "Trombone Borges" arose in a particularly strange phone conversation I had once, which was mostly, in fact, about trombones and Jorge Luis Borges. The words seemed to flow together nicely -- the repeated "bo" sound, I think -- and I decided it was just strange enough to be a unique name on the Net.

I feel a little bad that I'm taking the name away from, say, some actual trombone player who is named Borges; I am neither. I do like Borges's writing quite a bit, and have a healthy appreciation for the trombone, but that's about it.

I was going to conclude this explanation with a quote: "Unfortunately, the world is real. Unfortunately, I am Borges."

Except that I am not Borges.

Figure that one out.
