One spring I was home visiting my family in northeast Texas. I and my dad and brother had gone to Foxworth & Galbraith to buy some lumber to make me bookshelves. As the clerk was helping us take the lumber out to the truck, he knocked over a bucket of dead squirrels sitting in the back which my dad had shot with a .22 while standing in the yard. As the boy was pushing dead squirrels back into the bucket with the toe of his shoe, my dad asked, “do you know what that is?”
“Uh, a, uh bucket of dead squirrels, sir?” the hapless young clerk responded. About that time my brother sidled up to me and stage whispered in my ear, looking pointedly at the clerk, “I think he likes you.”
