Well, we have this little Book of Runes, being a family that enjoys having as much occult paraphernalia lying around as possible. In the book, it talks about
Odin, and describes his role in the creation of the
runic symbols.
It describes the process something like this: Odin was, for some reason, being punished, and was hanged by his foot from a tree. Suspended as he was above a small stream for most of the day, he began to see, below him floating in the water, the runic symbols.
Who knows if the story has any foundation in truth, but I thought it was delightful all the same. Hence, the dream Odin had whilst suspended above the stream: the creation of an alphabet.
