About

What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.

Juliet Banana is a hold-over back from when I still naively believed the internet had some semblance of anonymity. My real name, Lorena Cupcake, which I use most other social-networky places, follows the same formula: name + food product.

I'm too young to be old school but I was introduced to the internet back when blogs were called E/N and Altavista was bigger than Google and I was the only 13 year old around who wasn't really a middle-aged creepster. I still have best-internet-friends-4ever I talk to from back then, so I guess I figured out how to use bits and text to connect with real humans pretty quickly.

I've lived in Chicago for four years and the entire cabal knows me (if they existed) but I rarely go to events anymore due to being a single parent to my dog.

I help run feminist bike gang Tiny Fix and Chicago DIY music blog Store Brand Soda. I was recently crowned Best New Music Blogger of 2015 by the Chicago Reader.

I also do some freelance writing for sites like xoJane and Pitchfork. If you like my writing here, you can totally hire me to write for you.
